The Braun Series 3 line has long been a favorite among electric shaving enthusiasts.
The reasonable price, decent performance, and inexpensive replacement parts, all backed by Braun’s notorious reliability, were the key ingredients to the series’ success.
After several years of very strong sales, Braun decided to revamp its line of entry-level shavers.
The new Series 3 family includes several variations, with razors suitable for wet & dry or dry-only operation.
Let’s take a closer look at what they have to offer and then check out the most important differences between the various Series 3 models.

Braun Series 3 overview
The new Series 3 from Braun is a no-frills family of electric shavers aimed at the budget-conscious buyer.
It features a simple 3-blade fixed shaving head. The 3 shaving elements are however independent and can move freely.
As with all modern Braun razors, the blades and foils are integrated into a single piece called a cassette.
As we know from the older generation, these cassettes offer great value for money as they are inexpensive (at least when compared to similar shavers from Panasonic for example) and must be replaced only once every 18 months.
They are also backward compatible with the old Series 3 like the 340s, 380s and so on.
The design of the current shavers is sleeker and more refined, but again, nothing too radical.
They are still instantly recognizable as Braun Series 3 razors.
Braun Series 3 differences and model comparison
The new Series 3 lineup is actually comprised of 3 distinct subfamilies of electric shavers.
Apart from the differences in price and visuals, there are some performance differences as well.
Let’s check out each of them.
1. Braun Series 3
This is the basic Series 3 line, with models like the 310s (wet & dry) or 300s (dry only).
They are also the least expensive Series 3 variation, but that comes with a few shortcomings: there’s no slide-out hair trimmer and the shavers are fitted with a smaller battery that provides only 20 minutes of cordless operation.
The dry-only models (for example, the 300s) will however work while charging.
The basic Series 3 shavers like the 300s above also come with a different shaving head than the rest of the Series 3 (part number 21b).
You can however use the better shaving head (32b/32s) as it will fit just fine.
The 21b cassette is inferior in my opinion to the 32b; it’s not as comfortable nor as smooth and seems to require more strokes in order to get a clean shave.
2. Braun Series 3 ProSkin
The ProSkin line is the more premium Series 3 and includes features like a slide-out hair trimmer (certain models), a bigger battery (45 minutes of use) and better battery level indicator.
In order to differentiate the new razors from the old Series 3 line, Braun decided to use a simple, but effective name scheme by only adding a 0 after the 3.
For example, the old Series 3 340s is now the 3040s and so on.
The ProSkin models are also available with a cleaning station — for example, the Series 3 ProSkin 3050cc.
Performance-wise, the ProSkin models aren’t much different from the basic, entry-level Series.
They do have a nicer design and better ergonomics, mainly to that textured rubberized sleeve.
The main difference is the shaving head (32s/32b) that has a revised hole pattern, supposedly helping to catch the hairs more efficiently.
In practice, the 32b cassette of the ProSkin Series 3 feels more comfortable and handles longer, flat-lying hairs significantly better.

By the way, the 32s is just the variation of this shaving head with a silver frame (hence the s). The 32b has a black frame.
The 32b/32s is a quick upgrade for the more basic Series 3 models like the 300s or 310s. As mentioned previously, it is compatible and will fit perfectly.

The dry-only models will also work with the cord plugged in, so if that’s important to you, you may very well opt for one of those.
The wet & dry Series 3 can only be operated cordless as a safety precaution.
All Series 3 shavers (including the dry-only models) are waterproof and can be rinsed under the tap for effective cleaning.
3. Braun Series 3 Shave&Style
The Shave&Style models are basically the exact same models of the basic Series 3 (310s, 300s) and Series 3 ProSkin (3010s, 3000s), but they also include a trimmer attachment and 5 combs.
As a result, you can swap the shaving head and use the trimmer with the trimmer attachment to maintain a beard or even to shave your head.
There are four Shave&Style models available: the 3010BT (wet & dry), 3000BT (dry only), 310BT (wet & dry) and 300BT (dry only).
As the names suggest, they are basically the Series 3 ProSkin 3010s, 3000s, 310s and 300s, respectively, but bundled with the aforementioned accessories for styling the hair/beard.
You can also purchase the trimmer attachment and combes separately and use them with any Series 3 model. The part number for the set is 32BT.
I wouldn’t really consider the 300BT and 310BT (based on the basic Series 3) because of their smaller battery and the 21b cassette.
Which Series 3 model should you buy?
That decision should really come down to two factors: your budget and your personal requirements.
For example, the basic Series 3 should be very appealing due to its low price.
The smaller battery is a minus, especially in the case of the wet & dry models like the 310s that will not work while charging.
Also, the entry-level Series 3 only has a low charge indicator, so that could take you by surprise when you least expect it.
There is a 5-minute quick charge feature that should provide enough charge to complete one shave.
Some users consider the ability to use a shaver cordless and corded a must-have, so if that’s the case, you should check out some of the dry-only models.
The Braun 300s is one of those and likely the cheapest Series 3 you can buy right now.
Braun Series 3 300s
The 21b cassette is my main gripe with it, but as mentioned previously, you can actually upgrade to the better 32b/32s.
My personal pick would be the 3000s (cordless and corded) or 3040s (cordless only, hair trimmer) from the ProSkin line.
The bigger battery, nicer design, better battery display indicator (certain models), and the slide-out trimmer (certain models) are the main reasons for that.
Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3040s
You can usually get them for not a whole lot more money compared to the 300s above.
For example, the 3040s is often discounted and thus offers fantastic value for money.
It’s also fitted with a slide-out trimmer. And while far from being great, it’s still useful for some light grooming.
Alternatively, there’s the Series 3 3010s that I reviewed here and it’s basically identical to the 3040s, minus the slide-out trimmer.
However, if you can get it for significantly less money, I think it’s a solid option.
Finally, the dry-only ProSkin 3000s can be used while charging, so again if that’s a must-have for you, it can be bought for a very reasonable price.
Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3000s
Again, no trimmer is present on this shaver, but that’s not a deal-breaker in my opinion.
Performance-wise, all the Series 3 ProSkin are exactly the same, so you should only consider the price and accessories/features when deciding which one to buy.
So what about the cc Series 3 ProSkin models that come with a cleaning station?
Well, they are usually quite pricey for an entry-level razor and to be honest, the shavers are pretty easy to clean manually.
The station seems to remain unchanged from the previous Series 3 generation and it uses the same alcohol-based Braun CCR refills.
The Series 3 ProSkin 3050cc is one of the models that include the cleaning base and again, it looks like the top pick as it usually costs less than the other similar models (3070cc, 3090cc).
As mentioned previously, a very interesting addition to the Series 3 is the set of compatible accessories (called Braun 32BT) designed specifically for men who maintain a beard.
Precisely, we have a trimmer attachment that works very similarly to a regular facial trimmer and can be used to trim an entire beard.
You simply take out the regular cassette and insert the trimmer in its place.
There are also 5 combs with different lengths (1 to 7 mm).
You can buy the trimmer attachment and combs separately and use it with your existing Series 3 or you can buy it as a package with the shaver included (for example, the Braun Series 3 3010BT Shave & Style is such a model).
Who should you buy the Braun Series 3?
As mentioned earlier, the Series 3 is Braun’s entry-level family of electric razors for men.
If you’re not particularly demanding when it comes to the closeness of the shave and you don’t want to spend a lot of money on an electric shaver, the Series 3 is one of the most compelling offerings out there.
They’re priced quite reasonably, especially the dry-only ProSkin models that represent a great compromise in my opinion.
The Series 3 shavers work best when used on shorter facial hair, but perform better than other similarly priced foil shavers from the competition when used on a 2 or 3 days beard (the ProSkin models in particular).
They are arguably the most comfortable electric razors in this price range as well, so if you have sensitive skin, definitely consider them.
The Braun Series 3 would also be an excellent choice for a beginner or a teenager. They are really easy to use, clean and cheap to maintain.
They’re usually inexpensive to buy as well and you can often find several Series 3 models for a bargain price.
And as we saw, as far as shaving performance goes, they are all basically the same.
Overall, the new Series 3 is a welcome revamp of an already excellent line of shavers.
While it doesn’t bring any major improvements, it will most likely help Braun maintain a top position in the entry-level market of electric razors.
Series 3 alternatives
In this segment of affordable electric razors, the Series 3, particularly the ProSkin sub-series, is a really solid option.
However, the competition also offers a few interesting shavers.
If you think a rotary would suit you better or you know from previous experience that you usually get a better shave using one, definitely check out the Series 2000 or even 3000 from Philips (Norelco).
My picks would be the Shaver 2300 from the Series 2000 or the Shaver 3800/3500 from the slightly better and slightly pricier Series 3000.
As for other similar foil razors to the Series 3, the Panasonic Arc 3 line has been their main competitor for years.
The Arc 3 razors shave a bit closer than the Series 3, but aren’t as good on longer, flat-lying hairs.
They’re also pricier and the replacement foils and blades are more expensive.
It all comes down to what would better suit your needs. For more details you can check out my detailed comparison.
All Arc 3 models perform the same as long as they’re fitted with the powerful 13 000 CPM (cycles per minute) motors. Such models are the ES8103, ES-LT67 or the ES-LL41-K.
If you can’t get any of those Arc3s, definitely check the specs sheet and look for that 13 000 CPM motor.
Avoid the ones that come with the 10 000 or 7600 units, those will perform noticeably worse.
That pretty much concludes my comparison of the Braun Series 3 electric shavers. Hopefully you now have a clear understanding of the differences between the various models and you can choose the one that will suit you the best.

If the battery still holds a decent charge, you could buy a replacement shaving head as they are pretty reasonably priced. You will need the 32b replacement cassette for your 340s. But if you can get a new Series 3 ProSkin for not a whole lot more (that depends on the current discounts and the country you live in), then getting the whole razor does make more sense.

The 3030s is suitable for dry shaving only. The shaving performance between the two is identical. The Series 3 works best when used on short facial hair – I would say below 2.5 mm.

The color is basically the only difference between them; both come with a hair trimmer and a protective cap. The precision lock is just a switch that locks the blades into place and it’s only present on certain Series 3 models (please see the table in the article). Neither the 3020s or the 3030s has it, but it doesn’t really matter.

Thanks for the informative review of the Braun 3 Series shavers. It’s refreshing to find an unbiased review that’s not a “paid advertisement”. I purchased the 3010BT to replace my old Braun 7526 that recently died and a cheap off brand beard trimmer. While the 7526 was an excellent shaver, I am not a fan of the cleaner cartridges. They work well put are not very cost effective. Looking forward to see how well this unit works and how easy it is to clean.

The Series 3 solo models lack the electronics needed to communicate with the station. The Series 7 is the only one that will work with a compatible cleaning & charging station.

The 320-s4 is part of the previous generation and yes, it’s suitable for dry only use. However, in terms of features and performance it’s very similar to the new Series 3 models. It uses the same foils and blades and it’s also fitted with a long hair trimmer. If you can find it at a better price than let’s say a 3040s, then by all means go for it. As I said, the actual shaving performance will be the same.

Thank you for your comment. Both the 3040s and 3020s are IPX7 certified, so you can submerge them in water without any problems. However, the 3040s is explicitly marketed as a wet & dry shaver since it won’t work while charging (as a safety precaution). The 3020s does work when it’s connected to an outlet, so that would be a serious risk if someone where to use it like that in the shower for example.
The performance of the two shavers is indeed identical and they also use the same shaving head.

You are welcome, Mark. While I cannot explicitly recommend it (for obvious reasons), there are many users that have successfully used them in that manner, with absolutely no damage to the shavers. Just make sure to clean your Series 3 after every use and also lubricate it regularly (clipper oil, sewing machine oil or a lubricating spray like Remington Shaver Saver will work great).

That’s definitely the best Braun shaver you can get in that price range. Try to look for a solo model (that doesn’t come with a cleaning station), they are always cheaper than the cc models.

I have an old Braun 5 series, and just bought the 3020S to use while travelling.
I’m dismayed, however, to find that I cannot separate the cutter head from the blades, so I can only clean them with running water. This seems to me to be a retrograde step, probably to ensure users have to buy the whole assembly at a greater price.
My question is how best to clean the blades and foil. Hot water seems a poor way of doing that, and direct application of an alcohol cleaner is better than just spraying into the head.
Also, do you recommend running the shaver while dousing it in hot water to clean it.
Where exactly does one insert the drop of oil? Should the oil be used while the shaver is running?
Is the old Braun 5 series more powerful and efficient than the new 3020 series?

Thank you for your comment. All current Braun shavers (except for their travel shavers) use these so-called cassettes that have the blades and foils merged into a single piece. This does make a manual cleaning more difficult, but on the Series 3 is not nearly as bad compared to the current Series 5, 7 or 9. I’ve found that the best way to clean them is to use a bit of liquid soap and warm tap water. After completing your shave, remove the cassette and gently tap the plastic frame on the sink to get rid of the bulk of hair strands. Put it back on the shaver, add a bit of water and few drops of liquid soap on the foils, then turn the shaver on and let it run for around 15 seconds. You can add a few drops of water if needed so the soap can lather nicely. Rinse the shaving head under warm tap water (with the shaver still running). After that, turn the razor off, remove the cassette, rinse it thoroughly (both the outside and the inner part). Rinse the shaver’s body as well, shake off the water and gently pat the parts with a towel and let them air dry completely.
As for the lubrication, I would do it after every cleaning that involves the use of soap. You must place a single drop of oil on the outside of each cutting element (in the case of the Series 3, two foils and one middle trimmer). Let the shaver run for a few seconds so the oil can coat the blades evenly, then pat the foils gently with a paper tissue to absorb any excess oil.
I haven’t got the chance to test the older Series 5 unfortunately, so I cannot compare it directly to the Series 3. The current Series 5 is a superior shaver though, it feels more powerful and faster and also gets flat hairs a lot more efficiently.

Question.. first I no longer have the original instructions. I’ve been satisfactorily using my Series 3 Braun for quite a few years. I do complain the head could perform longer than two to three months before needing replacement. I’m writing because the small AMBER light is now lit but I don’t know why. I’m familiar with the charging green light. What does the yellow light indicate? I don’t recall seing this light glowing. What should I be doing about it.

You can use an electric shaver to shave your head as well (even though they are designed to shave facial hair). Just make sure the hair on your head is very short — otherwise, it will miss and yank some of them. The Series 3 is a very decent entry-level razor, but something like a Braun Series 9 or Panasonic Arc 4/5 will be faster and more efficient (and also cost a lot more).

Yes, that’s the main difference. The 3020 also comes with the 32b shaving head that has different foil hole pattern compared to the older 21b on the 300s. But the differences between them are not major.

From your comment, I understand that it must be a Braun Series 3, so in that case my recommendation would be the 3040s. While all the models in the Series 3 ProSkin will ultimately shave the same, the 3040s is usually priced reasonably, it’s available in most regions, it’s a wet/dry model and it also has a slide out trimmer. The Series 3 is a very decent budget shaver, however I personally think that a Series 5 is superior in pretty much every aspect. So if you’re willing to spend a bit more on that one, I think it’s well worth the investment.

That is correct, there aren’t any other differences (besides the color). The 3000bt is not wet/dry certified, but you can still rinse it under the tap (it comes with IPX7 waterproofing). The corded use is a perk of these dry only models.

Thank you for your comment. To answer your questions:
1) That is correct, you are supposed to use it on dry skin only. You may use a pre-electric shave lotion (that dries in a matter of seconds), this can sometimes help with getting a closer and more comfortable shave.
2) It’s really up to you. I like to be more thorough when cleaning my shavers, so even if I only use them dry (so no gel/lather is involved), I like to give the shaving head good rinse under the tap, then remove it for more rinsing. Sometimes I would even use some liquid soap. But that’s just me.
If that sounds too fiddly, you can just let it run under the tap. Removing the shaving head would however be recommended after rinsing, otherwise it will take a longer time for the water to evaporate.
Also, the brush is only meant to be used on the inside of the cassette and not directly on the outer foils (the parts that come into contact with your skin). I personally find the brush useful only when for some reason I cannot rinse the shaver.

As far as shaving performance is concerned, both the 3080s and 3090cc are the same (in the context of dry shaving since only the 3080s is a wet/dry shaver). In my opinion, the cleaning station isn’t a must-have with the Series 3, so I would go for a cheaper model without the station (like the 3010s, 3040s, 3080s, etc.).
Using a shaver wet (with shaving cream) can be beneficial if you have very sensitive skin. You can buy a protective cap later on as well.

I think it could work well for shaving the head, but I cannot tell you that with certainty as I personally don’t shave my head. As a face shaver, the Series 3 is a very good option in this price range. A Series 5 will likely be a better option for shaving the head as well, but they are a bit pricier. Check out some of the solo models like the 5030s or 5040s, they usually have a more reasonable price.

The models that didn’t originally come with a station — the ones ending in –s like your 340s — lack an electronic component (chip) that allows the shavers to pair with the station. As a result, they will not work.

Both are from the same generation and performance-wise they are the same. The main difference is that the 3000BT comes with a trimmer attachment and various combs for trimming and edging a beard. That may or may not be of use to you. The 3080s on the other hand has an integrated slide-out trimmer, suitable for basic grooming.

The 3090cc will likely fit in the station, but I’m not sure that the cleaning feature will work. The shavers have a chip inside that allows them to pair with the compatible stations and I cannot tell you with certainty that a newer shaver like the 3090cc will pair with the station of your 390cc. The only 100% guaranteed to work solution would be to get another 390cc if you can still find one.

My previous two series 3 shavers, had plastic lugs which snapped off, making Shaver unuseable.

You are very welcome, Martin. The other shavers in Braun’s lineup (from the Series 5 and up) are actually all made out of plastic, but they are more feature-rich and the performance compared to a Series 3 is noticeably better. The Series 5 usually offers the best value for money and even the Series 7 if you can get a great deal on one of those. I wouldn’t let the plastic build steer me away from getting one, they’re quite sturdy actually and I’ve never had one fail on me yet.
None of the current shavers has a stainless steel body, at least not to my knowledge. There are a few select models from Panasonic and Philips that have aluminum bodies and those are quite nice. However, the shaving unit is still made out of plastic.

Is it your opinion that a Braun Series 3 foil razor would shave closer then a Philips Norelco series 5000 rotary razor?
I personally get a closer (and more comfortable) shave with a Series 3. I also think that for most users the Series 3 would be a safer choice than the Philips Series 5000. There are of course users that get better results with rotary shavers, so if you know from experience that you get along better with a rotary, then you may consider the Philips instead. But again, if that’s not the case, I would go with the Series 3.

I’ve also seen these new Series 5 and 7 and I am as eager as everyone to try them. But until then I’m afraid I cannot offer any recommendation with a reasonable degree of certainty. I will say however that they are quite aggressively priced — significantly lower than the ongoing Series 5 and 7 models. The foil setup seems very similar to the Series 3 and so does the cleaning station with the protruding arm that holds the shaver in place.
Again, I can only speculate, but I would be really surprised if they will out-perform the current Series 5 and 7, respectively. They should be at least as good as the Series 3 though, so if you’re not in a hurry, the 5018s seems like a good alternative to the 3080s.
I will be getting them as soon as they’re available and post detailed reviews and comparisons.

What is the difference between the 3040 and the 3080?

Got a 3010s and a plastic part came off when the cassette was removed. Does that qualify for warranty?
Definitely worth contacting Braun support and letting them know about the issue. They’re usually very cooperative and willing to send a free replacement cassette.
Is the 21b cassette discontinued? I’m having trouble finding it in Canada. The 32b is the one most available but on several sites others have complained of its quality. I know the 32b cassette will fit the 300s, but is it the same part or different in some way. It’s really annoying that Braun does not have the 21b available in my area nor a customer service line that I can contact with my questions.
The foil pattern is different, but no major differences between them. The 21b cassette can still be found on various online stores, so I’m inclined to think that it’s not discontinued. But if you can only get the 32b, that’s a perfectly fine alternative.

Any foil electric shaver can be used for shaving the head as well. Some will work better than others though, especially the more advanced ones with larger shaving heads and higher quality cutting elements. The Series 3 ProSkin should work decently provided you use it on short hair.

I used to shave with a Braun for some years, but it was costing me a pricey new foil every 3 months when they wear out and start to develop holes on the foil, so I changed over to a Phillips Rotary for some years.
Then the other day I saw a special offer going on the Braun series 3000s, and as the 2 foils on the heard are much smaller than the older models, I thought let me try out this new Braun.
To my surprise I discovered that this shaver gives a much closer shave than the rotary. So I am back with Braun for sure.
I have the 3000TS model which comes with a small protective pouch and a traveling bag which can hold all your other items you would need on a trip. The only thing I was surprised to discover was it did not include the small cleaning brush and protective shaver head cap.
I thought it was a bit mean not to include them in the deal. I checked the handbook and it said using a * that they were not included in the sale. Now I have to spend extra cash buying these items. I would have thought a brush and protection cap was the norm?

Thank you for your comment. I agree that they should be the norm, but unfortunately they aren’t, at least not when it comes to Braun. Panasonic is a lot more consistent with these accessories. Braun only includes the cap with several Series 3 and 5 models, while the brush is included with most of them. I am sorry you didn’t get any with your Series 3000TS, but at least it came with the travel case (that one’s missing with most Series 3 models).

The 300BT comes with the 21b shaving head instead of the 32b (found on the 3000BT and 3010BT) and it also has a smaller battery. The 32b head is in my experience superior, so I would consider the 3000BT or 3010BT.
As for the differences between these two, the 3000BT is a dry only shaver that will also work with the cord plugged in, while the 3010s is wet/dry and can only be operated cordless.

That would really depend on what exactly are you using the trimmer for.
If you’re only trimming and shaping your sideburns, then the slide-out trimmer would be more practical. If you need to pre-trim or maintain a beard, the dedicated beard trimmer will be a lot more capable.
If you decide to go with the 3020s, you can also buy the trimmer and combs set later on as it’s 100% compatible.

I was shopping for a shaver today and was going to buy the 3040s. I used your site to compare the Series 3 models. The first store I went to had one 3040s in stock, but the package was already opened and I did not want to buy it. I remember noticing the package said something like “Designed and engineered in Germany.” The 3000s boxes next to it said “Made in Germany.” I thought it was interesting the lower model was made in Germany, but not the higher one.
I went to a different store and noticed the 3040s boxes there said “Made in Germany” on them. At home, I looked on the shaver itself and it does say “Made in Germany” on it. The year 2020 is also on there. I wonder if Braun has shifted some production from China to Germany. I am located in the United States, in case that makes any difference in what I saw being stocked.

The differences between the Series 3, the Series 5 (the 50-M4500 is the new 2020 model), and the Series 7 are quite a few, including the price, comfort, power and how the shavers deal with difficult facial hair (for example, hairs that stay flat on the skin). Performance-wise, I’d say the difference between the 3020 and the 50-M4500 is not that noticeable, so if your budget is more limited, then go with the 3020. Also, if you have a lighter beard, it’s not really worth spending a lot of money on an advanced shaver.
If the price is not an issue, then the Series 7 is clearly the better shaver. It is more comfortable, faster, a lot better with flat-lying hairs and overall more enjoyable to use.

As you’ve covered in the chart and in the several posts above, the 3020s is meant as a dry shaver. The 5m waterproof isn’t a change on Braun’s part is it?
I’m assuming it is marketed as a dry shaver in that it works when plugged so *shouldn’t* be used in water, but the unit is waterproof to 5 metres so *could* be used in the shower (but absolutely not while plugged, and shouldn’t be charged while wet as that would be dangerous)?

Regarding your question, there are users that have successfully used a dry only Series 3 in the manner you described. All Series 3 models are waterproof (IPX7). I obviously can’t recommend using an electric shaver in a way that goes against the manufacturer’s guidelines.

I have a Braun 340s-4 wet/dry rechargeable shaver that I bought 4 and half years ago; I use the shaver basically every day (there are some occasions I skip the weekend shave), but normally I have the shave in the mornings without fail; this is just to say that Braun series 3, especially the model I’ve got (340s-4) is awesome; it has the same original “cassette”(head/cutter) as I haven’t changed it yet, and it shaves still with an 90% of effectiveness despite is more than 4 years old; it is obvious that the head/cutter is not as sharp as when it was brand new, but still it gives me very close, smooth, and irritation-free shaves in both dry and/or wet mode, the battery hold the charge for almost 2 weeks (when new the shaver was giving me 3 weeks of cordless shaves) but now it’s old and that was expected; nevertheless Braun 340s-4 dry/wet foil shaver is one of the best I’ve ever had (I had a few shavers in the past (Philips rotary dry shavers, Sanyo foil wet/dry shaver, Remington Rotary and Foil dry shavers and other Braun dry foil shavers) but the Braun brand has been one of the best, more durable, reliable, resonable (price) and an excellent-awesome performance.
I have also a Philips series 1000 dry rotary shaver, I got it 2 and half years ago for as little as £19.99 English pounds; as I had Philips rotary dry shavers in the past that gave me good shaves but with the problem of a bit of irritation I was like a bit skeptical with this Philips shaver, but it’s been a wonderful surprise to me; the Philips can handle 4 days beard of not shaving without a problem, giving me a wonderful, smooth and super close shave; I can recommend this Philips series 1000 rotary dry shaver for those that do not shave every day but want to have a comfortable, close and smooth shaves (without breaking the bank) as it offers excellent performance for a clean close shave for a very little price.
The trick of having a very long-lasting working shaver is to keep it clean and lubricated, also dry -empty the battery (in the case of Braun shavers) at least every 4 to 5 months in order to maintain a good performance and prolong the life of the battery, do this and I can assure you that your shaver regardless the model or brand, will last you for a very long time and it’ll give you excellent performances with clean, close and smooth shaves.

Many thanks for taking the time to share this — it’s actually quite impressive that after 4 and a half years of constant daily use your shaver can still hold a decent charge and it still uses the original cassette. I totally agree with your tips for maintaining a shaver in top shape. My experience with Braun shavers has been similar in terms of battery life, particularly the Series 7 in my case. It seems to be just as good as when the shaver was brand new.
Your results with the Series 1000 are also in line with the idea that rotary shavers, even the very basic ones, can usually handle longer beards better than most foil razors. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions (the Series 9000 Prestige and the new Series 6000), I almost always get irritation, so foil shavers are definitely more suitable for me.

I had a Braun Syncro the 7500 series razor that I bought new in 2005 and it lasted me 10 years! They made them nice in those days.
I believe it was the 1st razor to use the clean&charge system?

I’d say that it is. A clip-on trimmer is powered in the same way as the regular foil head (it gets power directly from the motor), while an integrated trimmer is powered by a secondary linkage. But the main advantage is that the cutting edge of a trimmer attachment is wider and more practical for trimming large areas. The way you hold the shaver when using this type of trimmer is also a plus in my opinion.

I noticed that you said the only difference between the dry only and wet&dry models was that the wet&dry models would not work while plugged in as a safety precaution, to ensure no issues while shaving wet. Given the fact that all 3000 series models use the same cassette, and there’s no special design element to help with wet shaving (i.e, while using gel or cream), does that mean I can use the 3020s for wet shaving, so long as it is not plugged in? I cannot recommend something against the manufacturer’s guidelines, however, your observations are entirely correct as all the Series 3 ProSkin models are waterproof and share the same IPX rating.

If you’re referring to the shaving head/cassette, then the 21b head used by the regular Series 3 models (the non ProSkin variations) will also fit. But I would suggest sticking to the 32b that originally comes with the 3040s as it is noticeably better.

Without any extensions of course, default trim size. According to what I found 3045s has 0.05mm. But 3010BT it says it has 1mm, which I am not sure they meant with or without the extensions.

I have been using 380s-4 for years. Recently an amber light blinked reminding me to change the blade. I bought 3040-S instead as the price is just a bit more than buying a new cassette. Since the machine 380s-4 is still running very well, I moved the cassette from 3040-S (32B) to 380s-4. Unfortunately I found the Precision mode switch on 380s-4 didn’t work, and I further found that there was a mechanical lackage on 32B to hook on the Precision switch of 380s-4. I understand there is not such a switch on 3040-S, my question are: aren’t 32B & 32S identical with the only difference of color? Which model of cassette could work with the Precision switch of 380s-4?

As far as I know, there’s a variation of the 32B cassette that comes with the Series 3 shavers that feature a precision lock (380s, 3080s, etc). However, it still uses the same part number, so it will be more difficult to find a 32B cassette that works with the precision setting switch. Because any 32B or 32S will work with any Series 3, you will often find your 380s in the list of compatible models, even if the precision switch will not work with that particular cassette. I recommend contacting Braun customer support and ask them where you can find the part, they’re usually very helpful in these situations.

I am new to Braun shaver and have a question about the foil blades. Do I ever need to take the foil blades out of the cassette and if not how do you clean them. The blades on my shaver accidently came out and now I can’t get them back in. Please advise.

No, you should never take the blades out of the cassette. You can still clean it fairly effectively by rinsing the head of the shaver with warm water and liquid hand soap (I posted a detailed guide here). If none of the plastic bits were broken when you accidentally took the blades out, you might be able to put them back properly. However, getting a new one might be the better option.

Yeah mine did that. If it comes apart again it can damage the foil and cut you. I just ordered a new cassette. better safe than sorry!

The color of the plastic frame is the only difference, they are basically the same otherwise. The 3040s comes with the black one (32b), but the 32s will also work perfectly fine.

The 3000bt is a good choice for sensitive skin in this price range. I’d say it’s better than similarly priced shavers from other brands (Panasonic Arc 3, Philips Series 3000). The trimmer attachments and combs are intended to be used on the face and head only, so not for body grooming.

All the Series 3 I’ve used were made in China, while the Series 5 is made in Germany. Braun currently outsources the actual manufacturing to various companies and then just assembles the shavers in Germany, allowing them to state they’re made in Germany. That’s the case with all their shavers from the Series 5 and up, but no one knows exactly the extent and details of this procedure.
Regarding which Series 3 models are wet and dry, you can check out the table in the post above. As for the Series 5, there’s a similar table in this post.

Which entry-level electric shaver would you recommend for maintaining a short stubble? I’ve so far considered either getting the 300BT or the 310s, but not sure what works best. I’ve always used a cartridge razor instead, but I’ve never really been a big fan of the way my face looks completely clean-shaven.
For short stubble, I would rather consider something like the Philips OneBlade or the Series 3 3010BT (bigger battery compared to the 300BT). The smallest comb in any Braun BT model will give you a 1mm stubble, so I don’t know if that’s short enough for you.

Yes, the trimmer head will fit the 3040s (or any other Series 3 ProSkin model) perfectly. The trimmer and combs are also available separately (part number is 32BT) if you can find them and don’t want to buy the whole 3010bt pack just for the accessories.

Thank you for the comment, much appreciated. The 3030s was not widely available at the time of writing (I’ve now added it to the comparison as well). It’s basically a corded-cordless ProSkin shaver with a slide-out trimmer.
It is waterproof like all the other Series 3 models, dry only or wet/dry. The 3030s is a dry-only shaver as a safety measure since it can also work with the cord plugged in. I cannot suggest using a shaver against the manufacturer’s recommendation, so it’s up to you if you decide to do so (taking all the safety precautions).

There seems to be Braun Series 3 300S RED with 20 min shaving time and Braun Series 3 300S RED Giftpack with reported 45 min shaving time with 1 hour of charging. Can this really be correct that Giftpack includes bigger battery?
If it does, would you recommend buying Braun Series 3 300S RED Giftback (with travel case) with NiMh battery, or bit more expensive Remington F5 Style (F5000) with Li-ion battery, if one wants to go with budget while keeping Mühle R89 as “the shaver” and electric as daily helper?
Also is there reasonable reasons to use more money in that case and get for example Braun Series 6 60 1000S for 99€, or Panasonic Arc5 for 99€?

The 300s with 45 minutes of shaving time is most likely an error. The basic Series 3 models like the 300s come with a smaller battery compared to the Series 3 ProSkin shavers that have 45. I would actually suggest getting a Series 3 ProSkin as a backup shaver since it also has a better shaving head (cassette) compared to the 300s. The ProSkin 3000s and 3040s are two such models, usually very reasonably priced. I think they’re overall better than the F5 style, even though the Remington does actually shave a bit closer.
The Arc 5 is a superior shaver in every aspect, but I’m not sure you should spend the extra money if you’ll only be using it as a helper. It’s definitely better than the Series 6 at the same price.

Gotta double check that battery somehow cause that (Braun 300S RED Gift pack) machine would be at discount now at 49€. Vomes with bag at same price as bt300 comes without, but with trimmerhead & combs. ProSkin and 3040 on the other hand are about 69-79€ so quite close those others mentioned.
Thanks also for comparing to Remington F5 Style. In my country dome buyers have said it to be better than Braun Series 5, but apparently that’s not the case exept for li-ion battery and “swing” head ehich might have cause those buyer reviews.
And yep, electric eill be secondary, I do have beard which I trim andvshave for other areas, especially when need bettet look. When time off & holidays I don’t shave as often, but atvtgevend might be that most shaves at week I would do with electric and eith razor only when want better results.

I think I might choose Braun Series 5 – 50B1000S as an “compromise”. Currently 10€ cheaper than those Braun Series 3 ProSkin models, being 69€. Has li-ion battery with 50 min cordless use and is basicly Series 3 with facelift.
I quess I can’t go all wrong eith that, or what fo you think by selecting that?

What is the best way to store my new shaver, to care for the battery, as it may not be used for a long time. The best way to store a shaver or any other device fitted with a rechargeable battery would be to make sure the battery has at least 60% charge and it’s then stored (ideally) in the original package in a safe place, away from a heat source or sunlight. That can be a drawer, a closet, a cabinet etc. You could even store it as it is when it arrives, but I prefer to verify that it works (getting a faulty shaver is extremely rare, but not impossible) and it would be a shame not to be able to use it (or return it) later on.
Also, some of the new shavers nowadays will not start (as a safety precaution) until you briefly plug them in, even for a second. So that may be the case with your 3000s as well, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I have very sensitive skin, so I wanted to sacrifice closeness for comfort. I tried all three major models, S9, S6, and S3 proskin. S9 was the closest, fastest, and quite comfortable. S6 was significantly less close and okay comfortable. But I was surprised with S3 proskin. For the first time in my life, I just enjoyed shaving. It was the least close shave but phenomenally comfortable. Better than any other model, in my experince.

I prefer clean shave and I have been using merkur 34c double edge razor, which is a very mild razor.
First time thinking to move to electric shaver to save time and making it faster. Any shaver which can give me as closed as a standard double edge razor is good for me.

I’d say it is comparable, especially regarding the closeness and power (I also reviewed it here). The Arc 6 is however more comfortable when compared to that particular Arc 5 (ES-LV67). You will be able to upgrade the foil later on to the newer, more comfortable models — they will fit perfectly. I wrote a detailed guide on that here.
As a side note, an exposed blade like the one on a safety razor will always shave closer than any electric shaver since there’s no physical barrier between it and the skin (in the form of a foil or guard). But the Arc 5 and Arc 6 are the ones with the highest chance of providing a satisfying shave in terms of closeness.

Sorry about your bad luck with your shaver. Unfortunately you will need a Series 3 ProSkin model that originally comes with a cleaning station in order for it to pair with the station. So that would be another 3050cc, 3070cc or 3090cc. A solo model like the 3040s will not work with a station.

I would like to ask you: why I cannot use a dry only shaver as a wet shaver if it head the is the same for them: 32b. Usually I shave dry, but very sometimes I shaved with my old 3040s wet.
So my previous model was 3040s, now I got a brand new 3020s.
I can’t see any different and both are waterproof by cleaning under the tap.
Of course I would use the 3020s as a wet shaver only with battery, very rarely, without cord.

The one that ticks most of the boxes is the 3020s. It’s black, has a slide-out trimmer and works cordless & corded. It’s a dry-only model because of the latter, but it is fully waterproof. If by trimmer head you refer to the click-on attachment, those are only available with the BT models like the 3010BT (blue and no slide-out trimmer) and 3000BT (no slide-out trimmer). The only option would be to purchase those attachments (trimmer&combs) separately for the 3020s (part number is 32BT).

In my opinion the LV67 would be overkill and it’s also more difficult to use as it has a large shaving head. I think you should buy any Braun Series 3 ProSkin that is available in Au, not necessarily the 3040s. All of them shave exactly the same. But make sure you get a ProSkin model, not the very basic Series 3 as the ProSkin models are better.

Regarding your questions:
— Braun doesn’t sell one and I don’t think I’ve seen a stand for the Series 3 from third-party manufacturers.
— There is a Series 3 charge stand that can be purchased separately, the part number is Braun 81654179. It is however pretty difficult to find, including online.
— A cleaning station will only work with a Series 3 cc model that originally came with one, like the 3050cc. It will not work with the 3040s, unfortunately.

For the series 3 Proskin 3040 or 3045, is the travel pouch better protection than the protective cap and worth the extra 10 euros? Or is the protective cap actually better?
In my opinion a protective cap should be enough as long as it stays in place. When traveling it can fall off if the shaver is not also in a case and you simply toss it in the luggage. For that reason, I think the case would maybe be the better option since the one that comes with the 3045s is pretty sturdy, not like the soft faux leather ones that Panasonic uses.

It seems to be just a regular (basic) Series 3, very similar to the 300s or 310s. In fact, it’s pretty much a black 310s since it can only be used cordless (the 300s works corded as well). The battery life is however 30 minutes, not 45.

Thanks for your website. I was just about to buy a new S3 on the assumption that it would work with my old CC station, but decided to check this assumption first. I actually have two CC stations and it looks like both will end up in landfill now! I tried to discuss product quality with Braun UK and whilst they are communicative they don’t plan to act. All my previous series 3 shavers broke at the trimmer due to poor plastic welding. One CC station stopped working (which is why I have 2) and my latest S3 still has charging light issues in spite of having been to Braun UK for repair! Since I still have 3 new CC cartridges I shall probably now buy a Braun shaver of a higher series with a new CC station (although I now need to check that the cartridges are compatible!)
