Applying a hydrating, soothing aftershave balm is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your skin upon completing your shave.
And this is true regardless if you’re using a manual razor or an electric shaver.
Granted, your skin takes less of a tall in the case of the latter (provided you’re using the right shaver and the right technique), but I would still highly recommend including an aftershave in your routine.
Here’s why.
- your skin is most vulnerable right after shaving;
- razor burn, irritation, and micro cuts can still occur when using an electric razor. A quality aftershave will have a calming effect and will reduce discomfort;
- a light and spotty exfoliation still takes place as a very thin layer of skin cells is scraped off, particularly the tissue around the hair shaft;
- keeping your skin hydrated and nourished, especially after shaving is highly recommended.
With that said, let’s check out some of the best aftershaves out there if you’re using an electric razor.

What are the hallmarks of a good aftershave?
Here are the main things to look for in a quality aftershave balm:
Soothing ingredients: Panthenol, Aloe vera, vitamin E, shea butter, glycerin etc.
Lightly scented. A heavy fragrance can irritate sensitive skin and can be overpowering. You may opt for a fragrance-free aftershave as well.
No nasty chemicals and preservatives. Things like parabens, phthalates, BHA and so on should not be on the ingredients list.
Alcohol-free (ideally). Alcohol stings and can dry your skin. However, I wouldn’t rule out completely aftershave balms containing alcohol as there are a few really good ones out there.
Aftershaves for electric razors
I want to quickly address this idea of an aftershave specifically geared toward men that use electric razors.
It’s safe to say that there isn’t such a thing.
In fact, any quality aftershave will do.
If it’s good enough for traditional shaving, it’s definitely up to the task here as well.
Let’s not forget that shaving with a razor blade is generally more taxing on the skin compared to using an electric razor.
Which are some of the best aftershaves in 2023?
While there are tons of excellent aftershaves out there, here are a few personal favorites of mine to get you started.
1. Proraso Sensitive Aftershave Balm
This is an excellent and reasonably priced aftershave balm that I use quite often. It’s of my go-to aftershave balms and a permanent stay in my shaving cabinet.
It is very lightly scented, has excellent moisturizing and calming properties and gets absorbed very fast into the skin, without leaving it greasy.
It would be a safe choice for most users since it’s also alcohol-free (Benzyl alcohol is different from Ethanol).
2. Nivea Sensitive Cooling Post Shave Balm
Another excellent product that offers great value for money comes from the German manufacturer Nivea.
I find it similar to the Proraso balm in terms of calming and moisturizing properties, but its fragrance is a little more potent.
It has a very nice classic, masculine, barbershop scent that I quite enjoy.
But if you have any perfume sensitivity I recommend choosing the Proraso aftershave as it’s very lightly scented.
It’s also alcohol-free, making it a safe choice for almost anyone.
3. Clinique For Men Post-Shave Soother
This aftershave balm from Clinique is the newest entry on my list for 2023.
I’ve actually tried it at the suggestion of a reader and I’m glad I did because this is a fantastic product.
Price aside, it’s currently my favorite post-shave balm.
It’s fragrance-free and contains a host of soothing and high-quality ingredients like Aloe leaf extract, Linseed extract, Sweet almond extract, Witch hazel and so on.
Since there’s no added perfume, it only has a mild, pleasant, herbal note from the natural ingredients.
It quickly goes away however once you apply the product to the skin and it’s basically fragrance-free.
It does contain Alcohol, but it really doesn’t feel like it.
For example, even if I have some visible razor burn, it doesn’t sting at all.
And applying any other Alcohol-based aftershave would inflict some significant discomfort.
However, there’s no trace of that when I use the Clinique post-shave soother.
My guess is that the Alcohol content is really low and the rest of the ingredients are extremely calming.
And that’s the most impressive thing about this aftershave — it’s among the most soothing and nourishing I’ve used so far.
The consistency is similar to the Nivea and Proraso balms, meaning it’s a bit more watery, but you only need a small amount and it gets absorbed into the skin very quickly, leaving no oily film.
So why only the number 3 spot?
Well, it’s expensive. Where I live I could buy 3 Proraso bottles for the same money and the Proraso bottle is larger as well (100ml vs 75ml).
But if that’s not an issue, the Clinique For Men Post-Shave Soother is one of the best aftershaves out there.
4. Tabac Original Aftershave Balm
This is the only aftershave balm on my list that contains Alcohol alongside the Clinique above.
While in the past I would stay clear of them completely, this one is another great product.
Tabac is a German brand that is well-known for the quality of their cosmetics.
And this aftershave is one of my favorite post-shave balms and I’ve been using it regularly for the past two years.
Even though I have sensitive and dry skin and I was a bit concerned about the alcohol it contains, it’s undoubtedly one of the best aftershaves out there.
It does sting a bit if I use a more aggressive shaver like the Panasonic Arc 5 which can cause some micro-cuts to the skin, but the discomfort quickly subsides and the skin feels extremely well-nourished and moisturized.
It has also reduced the pseudofolliculitis/razor bumps that I would often get. The alcohol in its composition could actually have something to do with that.
The bad part? It is rather expensive and sometimes difficult to source outside of Europe.
5. Truefitt & Hill Authentic No 10 Post Shave Balm
This was actually my first experience with Truefitt & Hill products and it lived up to my expectations.
While it is pricey, it contains a host of wonderful ingredients that will make your skin feel amazing after using it. It’s also paraben free.
The fragrance is another highlight of this aftershave: a discreet, citrusy and masculine scent that’s not overpowering and won’t clash with your fragrance.
6. Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm
This aftershave balm from Cremo is arguably the one with the best value for money on this list (especially if you live in the USA).
Fortunately, it also doesn’t disappoint.
It’s a really pleasant, hydrating and moisturizing balm with a very thick consistency and a refreshing, cooling effect on the skin.
There’s a Sensitive variation as well, but I haven’t tried it and the regular one seems to be really good anyway.
It contains high-quality ingredients like Shea butter, Tee tree leaf oil and menthol which gives that cooling sensation.
Final word
Post-shave treatment is one of the staples of men’s skin care.
Considering that we probably don’t put a lot of effort into taking care of our faces, I think this is a very important step we shouldn’t skip.
Even if you’re one of the lucky few that can get away without using an aftershave, it’s still a good idea to follow up your shave and apply some.
Keeping your skin hydrated is highly recommended and the benefits will be obvious as time passes.

The only fragrance free aftershave I’ve used so far is Ultimate Comfort from Truefitt & Hill and that one is pretty good, but very pricey. As an alternative, the Proraso sensitive aftershave mentioned in this post has a very subtle fragrance and I don’t think it will clash with your cologne.

So many shaving websites seem to focus on men that have either dry or sensitive skin. I have oily skin, it’s not sensitive and I cannot use aftershave balms or anything without alcohol. They make my skin feel warm and greasy, and they don’t refresh at all. I use Aqua Velva in the winter and Mennen’s Skin Bracer in the summer because it has a drier finish. To me, nothing feels better than a nice burning/cooling sensation. Just wanted to speak on behalf of the men who have different needs. I enjoy your site a lot and it’s very informative!

I’m a woman who has facial hair, thanks to a metabolic disorder. I have sensitive skin, and am prone to ingrown hairs. I actually get thick, coarse, dark hairs, especially on my neck and jawline. From this list the Proraso Sensitive Aftershave Balm gets the closest to your requirements. However, the perception of scent is very personal and you may still find it a bit too masculine or potent. An alternative would be to go for a fragrance-free aftershave balm like the Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort.

I’ve just moved to using an electric shaver and dry shave before I shower. I usually then use a face wash/exfoliator in it. Using an aftershave balm beforehand therefore seems pointless, but would it still be beneficial to use one afterwards? Or would it better to just use a standard moisturiser after showering?

That is a very good observation. I recommend applying any aftershave products after showering, in my opinion it would still be beneficial. Feel free to use whatever works best for you, be it an aftershave balm or a simple moisturiser. Also, I would try to avoid washing my face with hot water in the shower as it can cause some irritation.

I have tried the Jack Black. It is good for sensitive skin. I have mixed feelings about it. It leaves my face sticky and almost wax like. As if I am preparing to be the exhibit at the wax museum. Less so if I use a tiny amount.
The sticky quality is mentioned in Amazon reviews. Yet many really like it.

I’ve been shaving with electric shaver for the last 30 years, I normally use dry shaving and I have had a lot of aftershaves to keep my skin calm, moisturized and hydrated after using my electric shaver; I have some good aftershave lotions like ARAMIS and QUORUM but for my surprise, I have found a very cheap and wonderful aftershave balm that for the price it works like the most expensive ones; FRESHWOOD from BOOTS, this balm is super good quality and for the price you won’t find better balm aftershave, it does the work and will keep your skin feeling fresh, hydrated and irritation-redness free; this is really an excellent aftershave with a no strong scent (the scent will disappear in less than 5 minutes) so it won’t clash with your cologne or Eau de toilette, I can recommend this aftershave balm to anyone as it’s so thick and well prepare you will need just a small amount to put on your face to see the results.

I just made the jump to electric and your site has proven invaluable! You’ve mentioned Freelette as a good pre-shave lotion. The product description (and comments on Amazon) say that it can act as both a pre-shave AND aftershave. Has that been your experience? If so, that would seem to be a great way to save some time/money (apply once before shaving and be done). Or do you still recommend a separate aftershave balm?

In this situation, it would be best to use a non-greasy aftershave that gets easily absorbed into the skin. And while the ones recommended here are easily good enough in that regard when used on the face, for your scalp (and especially since you sweat a lot) they may not be ideal. However, they could still work and the only way to know is to actually try them. To me, the one from Truefitt & Hill gets very easily absorbed (without having that oily texture) and I don’t have any issues even when I go for a run and sweat a lot. But again, I am only using it on my face.
Another option would be to use an aftershave splash, although I am not a fan of those as they contain alcohol and can often sting and irritate the skin.

I have actually, many years ago.
The aftershave splash/lotion contains alcohol, which is the main reason why I don’t use it. I have very dry skin and I stay clear of alcohol-based aftershave products. With that said, once you get past the initial stinging, the comfort and moisturizing properties are quite good. The scent is potent and it’s the same spicey, barbershop type of smell specific to Speick products. I would definitely prefer something with a more mild fragrance.
The aftershave balm, while very soothing and moisturizing, had an absolutely appaling scent. I just couldn’t stand it. I can’t really describe it, but it was the most off-putting scent I’ve ever come across in an aftershave. Again, this happened many years ago, so in the meantime, it could have been reformulated and drastically improved, but I cannot say that with certainty.
The Proraso balm is a really safe choice, very mild scent and a good product overall. I do like the Trefitt & Hill balm more, but that one is significantly more expensive and not always easy to get.

I agree that the Speick shave balm has a different fragrance, which is, I think, the fragrance of the Speick herb. That is sort of the point of their products, and their intensive creme and shaving sticks are also strongly Speick scented. I like the fragrance, but that is definitely a personal taste. If you are OK with the fragrance though, the after-shave balm is a very soothing product, and it is not too greasy, even in hot summer weather.

That is true, Speick uses that lavender-like herb in all of their products and I’m quite familiar with it as I use lots of Speick products (shaving cream, pre-shave, liquid hand soap and even shampoo). However, in the case of the balm, it was definitely off-putting or maybe I got one from a bad batch. It had a very potent chemical, plasticky smell that was really bad. I just couldn’t stand it. I’ll definitely try to buy it again as I’m sure that the product itself is really good.

I use Boots Freshwood aftershave balm, cheap in price but very effective, it calms, refreshes, hydrates and soothes the skin after a shave, it has a very nice light woody and spice scent that does not last or linger for too long so It can be used in combination with your cologne as the smell won’t crash with your fragrance; I have been using this aftershave balm for a very long time as it’s very affordable and still, I can combine it with my colognes (Aramis, Quorum, Yatagan, and Agua Brava) as the light scent of the aftershave balm combines very well with my fragrances due to its light woody and spice aroma of which I am a follower and wearer (woods, patchouli, oakmoss, tobacco, and leather) are the notes I love in my aftershaves and colognes.

Hi Ovidiu, thank you for this list. Just one caveat though, since you mentioned that a good aftershave has to be alcohol-free, you might want to reconsider Proraso’s presence on this list. I’ve recently tried them and I believe they might have some alcohol in it. Other recent reviews on Amazon have also noticed this. It seems Proraso might have changed the contents of their aftershave recently, which is a shame since earlier reviews had nothing but praise for it. I think the same can also be said of Nivea, though I’m not sure about that one since I haven’t tried their aftershave recently. Other than that though, thanks again for the recommendations!

The Proraso Sensitive aftershave balm that I know definitely did not have any alcohol. I honestly don’t know if they decided to add it to the ingredients list — that would indeed be a shame. I will look more into this and update the post. As for Nivea, there are currently quite a few flankers of the original Sensitive balm and most of them are alcohol-free — look for the ones that have 0% Alcohol on the packaging and on the bottle.

T&H products have always been pricey, unfortunately. It’s a shame that they discontinued the Authentic No 10 balm, which was by far the best smelling aftershave I’ve ever used (highly subjective though).
I’ve checked the contents of the proraso sensitive aftershve and i found benzyl alchol near the end of the list but this link state that itsn’t like classic alchol

Thank you for the comment. That is indeed a different compound — alcohol-free in the context of cosmetics refers to no ethanol or alcohol denat. Products containing Benzyl alcohol are even labeled alcohol-free if there’s no ethanol in the ingredients.
The blue variation is not available where I live so I haven’t tried it, unfortunately.

I agree that the Spiek balm is hard on the nostrils, though I don’t mind the more neutral scent of Spiek’s clear after-shave lotion. I usually mix it in my palm with a dab of l’Occitane en Provence after-shave balm. Equally soothing and effective by itself is the La Toja creamy after-shave balm, which absorbs quickly into the skin and has a pleasant, short-lived masculine scent. All products mentioned are reasonably priced.

I’ve actually tried finding a decent one for myself some years ago, but to no avail. I think there were a couple from L’oreal and Neutrogena if I recall correctly, but the sun protection wasn’t great (blocking only UVB radiation). In my opinion it’s much better to use a good aftershave (no SFP) that works well for you and simply apply sun protection cream/moisturizer afterward. I personally like the ones from Jack Black.

I have actually. It’s a good product, but I didn’t use it that much in the end. I prefer having a regular daily moisturizer (no SPF) and another one with a high SPF (the Double Duty moisturizer only has SPF20) that I can use when I know I’ll be staying out in the sun a lot. And that’s simply because these moisturizers that have SPF are also a bit oily and I don’t really like that. So I simply use a regular moisturizer (right now I have one from Clarins Men, great stuff) and the SPF one is actually from Jack Black, it’s called Sun Guard and has SPF45. It’s a really good product and it’s also water-resistant (I usually apply it before I go for a run).

For a regular post shave balm I am using the Art of Shaving post shave balm unscented. Works well. I was looking for something when I go out. For a post shave product I switched from Jack Black post shave Gel to the Art of Shaving Balm Unscented.
I am still looking for an unscented pre-shave. I hope Lab Series brings back their pre-shave.
I switched back again to Jack Black. Others make me itch or burn.

Are you aware of Clinique Post Shave Soother? My dermatologist recommended I try it. I find it least likely to impede my Prestige when I shave the following day. Also not at all sticky. Not as thick as some of the others, but for me, a good choice. You need a very small amount for it to work.

Unfortunately T&H just stopped selling it and there’s currently no other aftershave in the Authentic No 10 line. I still managed to grab one last year from a T&H importer here in Romania, but it’s not available anymore. It’s a shame as it was a really great aftershave and although pricey, it was still cheaper than any other T&H aftershave. I also love the T&H Grafton aftershave balm, which has to be my all-time favorite scent, but it’s just too expensive. That one is also missing from their site, but it’s still available in a sample pack.

With certain aftershaves that sensation is common if you’ve suffered some razor burn (micro-cuts and abrasions) during your shave. Certain ingredients (alcohol in particular) can cause a brief burning sensation but it usually doesn’t last long and in the case of a quality aftershave it’ll feel a lot better soon after. The Proraso sensitive is less likely to cause any burning feeling, but it can still happen — again, in particular if the shave was a bit more aggressive.

Ovidiu the sensation is actually regardless of shave. It’s not a tingling but a kind of burning one, somehow like warming my skin up. I tried it also on a normal non-shaving day, and the burn is there. But then again, it could be because I exfoliate somewhat too often.
My shaver is Braun series 9, again chose it after reading your website!
That’s very interesting — I don’t think you have a specific sensitivity to that aftershave or its ingredients, so the exfoliation would be the more likely culprit. If done too aggressively or you use a scrub with sharp beads (like bamboo bits), that one can inflict lots of microabrasions. I personally would only do it once or twice a week unless there’s a specific reason to exfoliate more often.
