The Series 8 represents one of Braun’s most recent lines of electric shavers for men.
And while the launch of a new Braun shaver is usually a big deal that implies some extensive marketing campaigns, that wasn’t the case with the Series 8.
It was quietly rolled out somewhere in 2019 without even issuing a press release. And for a long period of time, the Series 8 range wasn’t even listed on Braun’s USA website for example.
The new series sparked a lot of interest among potential buyers despite being this elusive product that wasn’t even available in most countries, at least in the beginning.
And unsurprisingly, the question on everyone’s mind was of course whether this was the successor of the Series 7.
Well, I bought the Series 8, used it for a few weeks and in this article I’ll cover everything there is to know about Braun’s Series 8, including how it compares to the brand’s current top performers, the Series 7 and 9.

What exactly is the Series 8 and where does it fit?
When I first came across the Series 8, I immediately thought that Braun just decided to Frankenstein together different parts of the Series 5, 7 and 9.
And to be honest, the reality isn’t very far from that.
From a purely visual standpoint, the new series definitely exhibits Braun’s current design language that we first saw with the Series 5 and Series 9.
So the Series 8 is a 3 blade foil electric razor that appears to fill the gap between the Series 7 and Series 9 (at least from the name perspective).
However, considering its features, price, and particularly the shaving performance, things are a bit different in reality as you’ll see.
But the Series 8 does come with some distinctive features and improvements of its own.
Let’s quickly go over the most important ones.
Braun Series 8 features overview
1. Three Shaving elements
As mentioned previously, the Series 8 features a familiar 3 blade setup, with two outer foils that shave hairs close to the skin (called OptiFoils) and one middle trimmer for catching and trimming longer, flat-lying hairs.
It is pretty much identical to the ones used on the Series 7 and 5 as you can see in the image below.
However, it is a new part specifically made for the Series 8 called 83M and won’t fit the other two models, mainly because of the shape of the plastic frame.
Again, the foils and middle trimmers themselves seem identical to the ones used on the Series 5 and 7.
This immediately hints at a somewhat similar shaving performance, but we’ll get to that right away.
Fun fact: Braun still tries to push the idea that the Series 8 has 4 shaving elements. That’s misleading, to put it lightly. We’ve seen the same approach in the case of the S9 (which according to Braun had 5 shaving elements).
2. 60 minutes of cordless shaving time
This is in my opinion one of the main highlights of the shaver and a clear improvement over most other shavers in Braun’s lineup.
The Series 8 is fitted with a larger battery that is good for an impressive 60 minutes worth of shaving time, compared to the usual 45 or 50 minutes.
All Series 8 models are wet/dry shavers, meaning they can only be operated cordless.
In this context, the larger battery is definitely welcome, along with the 5-minute quick charge function.
3. Beard density sensor
This is the same technology found on the Series 9 and on some shavers from Panasonic for example.
According to Braun, the sensor reads the density of the beard and adjusts the power output for optimum performance and comfort. In practice, this technology has always been pretty much useless.
It also means that there are no personalization modes like on the Series 7 (those were also rather gimmicky, to be honest, but at least you could select them yourself when you wanted to).
4. 8D shaving head
Braun says that the Series 8 has an 8-directional shaving head. I honestly have no idea how they came up with that number.
The shaving head can only swivel up and down and the three shaving elements can move independently.
And to be honest, that is good enough. In fact, in my opinion this simple setup seems to work the best.
Panasonic’s super complex flexing shaving heads for example are just annoying and only look good in the specs sheet.
5. Travel lock
This isn’t normally a big deal that’s worth mentioning, however, in this case, I think it is important simply because the Series 7 didn’t have a travel lock.
So yes, on the Series 8 the power button can be locked from accidentally turning the razor on.
6. Advanced 32-bit processor
Just like the latest Series 9 93XX models, the Series 8 comes with a 32-bit MCU (microcontroller unit).
While such details are usually relevant in the case of smartphones or computers, a 32-bit MCU will be able to process a lot more data and a lot faster than the 8-bit MCU that other shavers use.
How much will this impact the actual shaving performance is debatable, but in my opinion it is again something that mainly looks good in the specs.
7. Sonic technology with 30 000 cutting actions per minute
By this, Braun simply means that the Series 8 is fitted with a 10 000 CPM (cycles per minute) motor, just like the Series 7 and 9 (30 000 divided by 3 shaving elements).
The Sonic part means that we still get those tiny vibrations/pulsations that supposedly help to catch more hairs during a stroke.
8. Warranty
The Braun Series 8 comes with a 2-year worldwide warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Braun Series 8 model comparison
In typical Braun fashion, the Series 8 is offered in variations that come with or without a cleaning station.
The model names that end in cc (like 8370cc) include a cleaning station, while the ones ending in s (8330s) do not and usually cost less.
Also, you may have noticed that the Series 8 model names start with either 83 or 84.
The 83 Series 8 are actually the original models that were first launched almost 3 years ago.
Last year though, a revised Series 8 was introduced — the 84 models. You’ll also find them referred to as the Series 8 Pro.
Braun Series 8 8457cc (Pro)
And while the shaving performance is identical to the 83 models (they even use the exact shaving heads/cassettes), there are some differences.
Here they are:
1. The 84 models come with an updated cleaning station.
Precisely, it’s the same station that’s included with the Series 9 93xx and Series 9 Pro 94xx. This means it’s fitted with a fan that also dries the shaving head.
The older 83 models (like the 8370cc or 8390cc) come with a more basic station that does not have any active drying system.
The Cleaning stations shipped with the 84 cc Series 8 are the type 5430 S-9 (sometimes listed as 9484-5CC).
2. New colors.
The 84 Series 8 shavers also come in new colors that look really nice in my opinion, particularly the Galvano Silver (available on the 8457cc and 8467cc models).
The other new color options are matte black and a greyish blue called Fjord Grey.
These colors are country-specific; for example, the USA is only getting the Galvano Silver colorway (available with the 8457cc and 8467cc).
The rest of the features are exactly the same, so it’s no surprise that the newer Series 8 Pro will shave exactly the same as the older 83 models.
However, considering the above-mentioned differences, getting an 84 Series 8 (aka Series 8 Pro) makes more sense, especially if you can get it for the same money as a similar 83 model.
For example, the 8370cc (8390cc) and 8391cc are identical, except that the latter comes with a hard leather travel case instead of the common textile variation shipped with the 8370cc and 8390cc.
Interestingly, as of 2022, only the 84 Series models show up on the official Braun websites from different countries.
For example, on the USA website, only the Series 8 8467cc is listed. However, other models are actually available for purchase as well in the USA, including the original 83 variations.
Similarly, Braun UK now only lists 3 Series 8 shavers, all of them from the 84 (Pro) line: 8467cc, 8417s, 8413s.
That said, you can actually still buy an 83 Series 8 (8391cc, 8390cc, 8370cc and 8350s). The 8390cc in particular seems to be the best pick in the UK thanks to its lower price:
The 8370cc is the model that I’ve bought and one that can still be found in most regions.
Initially, it used to be the only Series 8 available in the USA and the only one listed on Braun’s USA website.
As the name suggests, it comes with a cleaning and charging station that actually looks very similar to the one of the Series 5 (and 9).
It is however a Series 8 specific station and it is included with all of the 83 cc models.
But as mentioned above, it does not have any drying mechanism, unlike the stations shipped with the 84 Series 8 cc shavers.
Fun fact: the 8370cc shaver above will actually work with the newer station as well (shipped with the 84 cc shavers).
Here is a comparison table that summarizes the main differences between the most popular Series 8 models currently available, from both the original and the Pro series.

As you can see from the table, some of the cc models that come with a station have three cleaning programs (short, medium, intensive), while most of them only have one.
In my opinion this isn’t important as the programs themselves are very similar and you shouldn’t overlook the ones with only the standard program, especially if you can get a good deal on one.
Will an s (solo) Series 8 shaver work with a cleaning station?
This is one of the most confusing aspects regarding the Series 8 line, particularly since Braun’s families of shavers are very inconsistent in that regard.
For example, only specific Series 9 solo models (93xxs and 94xxs) will work with a specific station, while none of the old Series 5 will pair with a station.
Getting back to the Series 8, the answer is yes, a Series 8 Solo shaver like the 8330s or a newer 8417s will work with a compatible station purchased later on.
That said, there’s a very important difference when it comes to the 83 and 84 solo models and the compatibility with a cleaning system.
Precisely, the 83 Series 8 s shavers (8330s etc) will work with the old Series 8 station (no drying system) originally shipped with the 83 cc models (8370cc, 8390cc etc), but also with the new one that comes with the 84 cc models (8467cc etc).
The 84 Series 8 solo models on the other hand will only be compatible with the new station.
The part number of the older S8 station (no drying function) is 81687143 (also referred to as Braun 5430CS S-8).
So if you own an 83 s shaver, that’s the original S8 station that will only charge and clean your shaver.
You can actually tell it apart from the new station just by looking at it.
The older S8 station (no drying fan) has this ledge on the top part and the shaver sits in it on a slant (you can also refer to the image above with the 8370cc during the cleaning process).
Here it is compared to the new one shipped with the 84 Series 8:
The other option would be to get one of the newer stations (type 5430CS S-9) included with the 84 cc Series 8 and get the drying function as well.
I tried my Series 8 8370cc with the new station and the cleaning and drying cycle work just fine.
As for the 84 solo Series 8, those will only be compatible with the new stations (type 5430CS S-9).
Here it is for example on Braun’s UK website.
As mentioned earlier, that is actually the station that’s also shipped with the latest Series 9 and Series 9 Pro and has a fan that dries the shaving head.
If you own or intend to buy a solo 84 Series 8 (like the 8417s for example), that’s the station that will work with your shaver.
If you have an older 83 Series 8, it will work with either the old station (81687143/5430CS S-8, no drying) or the new one (5430CS S-9, drying fan).
How does the Braun Series 8 shave?
While this won’t be a detailed review of the Series 8 performance, I will briefly go over the most important aspects.
In short, it shaves really well.
It is very similar to the Series 5 and Series 7 in terms of closeness and comfort. In fact, I’d say that it sits somewhere between those two, although closer to the Series 5, at least in my experience.
It’s gentle and forgiving but powerful enough and suitable for coarse beards as well.
I have very sensitive skin and didn’t have any major problems using it, be it dry or wet.
The closeness will be good enough for most users, but again I think the Panasonic Arc 4 and Arc 5 still have the edge here, even though they’re not as comfortable as the Series 8.
The Series 8 is also quite good with longer, flat hairs on the neck, definitely better than other foil shavers in this price range from the competition.
The slide-out hair trimmer is mediocre at best, but that’s the case with all Braun electric razors with this type of trimmer.
The battery life is fantastic and unlike the Series 7 with its useless battery indicator, the Series 8 has a simple but functional 5-level indicator.
The cc station works really well, the cleaning cycle is very short and does a great job of removing all the hairs and gunk from the shaving head.
You can of course clean the shaver manually and only use the station every once in a while for a thorough cleaning and remove any remaining debris from the cassette.
The cleaning unit uses the same Braun CCR cartridges, but there are cheaper third-party solutions available as well.
In conclusion, the Series 8 is a good and capable electric razor that will be suitable in most situations.
How does the Series 8 compare to Braun’s other shavers?
We absolutely have to compare the Braun Series 8 to the brand’s other top models, namely the Series 7 and Series 9.
In my opinion a direct comparison with the Series 5 makes the most sense since they are a lot more similar, so we’ll put it against the S5 as well.
But let’s start with Braun’s most popular model of the past decade, the Series 7.
Braun Series 8 vs Series 7
First of all, I have to mention that I don’t personally think about the Series 8 as a new Series 7, but more like a standalone product.
The Series 7 is Braun’s best-selling shaver and it will be updated at some point…with a new Series 7.
Let’s see what are the main differences between the Series 8 and 7.
Objectively speaking, the Series 8 comes with a few improvements over the Series 7.
Here they are:
1. Bigger battery
While the battery life on the Series 7 was very solid, the Series 8 is just fantastic in that regard, arguably one of the best out there right now.
2. Better battery indicator
The current Series 7 (78XX models) are fitted with a weird and useless, awkwardly placed battery indicator.
The one on the Series 8 is a simple 5-level indicator that just does its job and doesn’t require reading the manual to know what it means.
3. Better head locking mechanism
This is another well-known pet peeve with the Series 7 that was addressed with the Series 8 which features the same locking switch as the Series 5 and 9.
The Series 7 had a badly designed locking mechanism that would simply break when you tried to move the head from the locked position.
With the Series 8, the head will simply move into a different position with no damage to the ratcheting mechanism.
4. Travel lock
As mentioned earlier, the Series 7 didn’t have a travel lock. Not a huge deal, but again it’s something that was addressed with the Series 8.
It can be activated by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds.
5. No personalization modes
I consider this as a plus for the Series 8 since they were of little to no use on the 7.
On the other hand, the Series 8 has a built-in beard density sensor. To be honest, I cannot tell if it works or not. But it is there.
6. 32-bit MCU
Again, I don’t know how much this matters, but at least on the specs sheet, it is superior to the Series 7’s (presumably) 8-bit MCU.
7. Quieter operation
The Series 8 is (to my ear) slightly quieter than a Series 7 on the highest speed setting. It’s still not as quiet as a rotary shaver, but it’s not too bad for a foil machine.
8. Cleaning station with active drying
As mentioned earlier, the newer Series 8 84 (Pro) come with an updated cleaning station that also actively dries the shaving head.
The current Series 7 stations (both old and new) do not have any active drying.
9. Price
At least at the moment of writing this comparison, the Braun Series 8 seems to cost less than a corresponding Series 7.
For example, the model I bought (8370cc) was less than a Series 7 790cc or 7865cc.
That can very well change, so we shall see how things evolve in this regard.
So far these are pros of the Series 8 over the Series 7.
Let’s now try to find some negatives.
1. Less solid build quality
To me the Series 8 seems just a bit more plasticky and maybe even flimsier than the Series 7. I have owned a few Series 7 and I know that they can take a beating.
Time will tell if the Series 8 will hold up just as well.
2. Ergonomics
The Series 8 feels heavier despite my kitchen scale only showing the Series 8 being 1 gram heavier. It’s not a huge difference, but I could tell there was something off after years of using the Series 7.
The reason is probably the different weight balance of the shaver along with the rest of the aspects that affect its ergonomics, like grip, shape, and girth.
During and after use, my hand would sometimes fatigue when using the Series 8, which is something I never experienced with the Series 7.
3. Bulkier cleaning station
The station of the Series 8 is a bit larger than the one of the Series 7 and in my (subjective) opinion it doesn’t look as good.
4. Pricier replacement shaving heads
The Series 8 comes with a new cassette, called the 83M. It usually costs more than the 70s cassette used by the Series 7.
So is the Braun Series 8 a better shaver than the Series 7? Specs-wise, Yes.
But is it fundamentally better? No. In fact, if we consider strictly the shaving performance, the older Series 7 is in my opinion better.
Braun Series 7 790cc
While the end result will be quite similar — I actually shaved half my face with the Series 8 and the other half with the Series 7 — I would personally pick the Series 7 over the Series 8 without hesitation.
Here’s why:
- The Series 7 in its highest power setting feels faster despite having the same 10 000 CPM motor;
- The shaving head is ever so slightly more compact. This makes it feel more nimble;
- The pivoting of the shaving head, along with the movement of the three individual cutters seem to have a greater range of motion, further contributing to an enjoyable, faster, and more efficient shave;
- The Series 7 feels lighter than the Series 8; even though they weigh the same, the Series 7 is probably better balanced;
- The Series 7 seems to catch those flat neck hairs with fewer strokes despite using what seems to be an identical foil setup;
- The closeness of the shave with the Series 7 is slightly better;
- The Series 7 is overall more enjoyable, more comfortable and easier to use.
Again, the differences aren’t by any means huge, but as a long-time user of the Series 7, I can definitely notice them and would actually prefer the Series 7 over the Series 8 (despite its flaws that were addressed with the Series 8).
Braun Series 8 vs Series 9
In my opinion the Series 8 vs Series 9 comparison is a bit of a stretch, however it does make sense. Some potential buyers may want to know whether getting a Series 9 is worth the extra money.
So let’s check out the main differences between the Braun Series 8 and 9.
The Series 9 has an extra cutter for a total of four, making it more capable when shaving longer, wiry, cross-directional hairs.
If that sounds like you and you also shave less often, the Series 9 is probably a better choice.
Braun Series 9 9390cc
Otherwise, most users will likely be fine with the Series 8 (or 7).
Both the Series 9 and 8 are fitted with 10 000 CPM motors, however the Series 9 feels torquier and faster, which will likely translate into shorter shaving sessions, especially if you have very coarse, dense facial hair that tends to lie flat on the skin.
This is even more noticeable in the case of the Series 9 Pro which is slightly more powerful than the standard S9.
The Series 9 is also more forgiving and gentle, but the differences aren’t huge. The same is true with regards to closeness, both the Series 8 and 9 being similar, but again with a slight advantage for the Series 9/Series 9 Pro.
So yes, unsurprisingly, the Series 9 is the better shaver and it should be given the price difference from a Series 8.
The two shavers are similar when it comes to design, size, and how they feel in your hand.
During use, however, the Series 9 with its larger 4 blade shaving head will take more getting used to.
The Series 8 battery is better than the current Series 9 generation (92XX models), however Braun updated the Series 9 and fitted them with the same larger battery and the same 32-bit MCU.
Those models are the 93XX and 94XX (the so-called Pro line).
Fun fact: The Pro Series 9 comes with a charging case that is also compatible with the Series 8 if you want to buy it separately (part number 9484pc).
Also, the Series 9 is still in my opinion Braun’s quietest shaver so far. Compared side by side, the Series 8 is louder.
The cleaning stations of the Series 8 and 9 look exactly the same on the outside, but the one of the Series 9 is heavier and all of them are fitted with a fan that dries the shaving head once the cleaning cycle has been completed.
The Series 8 will actually fit inside the Series 9 station and the shaver will charge, however the cleaning and drying functions will not work.
So the choice between the Series 8 and Series 9 should be pretty straightforward; if your budget allows it and especially if you have wiry, coarse, flat-lying hairs (and shave less often), then get the Series 9.
It is the more powerful, faster, and more capable shaver between the two — and it should be since it costs more.
Braun Series 8 vs Series 5
This is the comparison that makes the most sense in my opinion, despite what the names of the series might suggest.
Theoretically, the Series 8 should be better than the Series 7, but not as good as the Series 9.
But as we saw, that’s not quite the case. In fact, considering how the Series 8 actually shaves, it feels more like a revised, refined, and rebranded Series 5.
Compared to the Series 5, the Series 8 doesn’t vibrate as much, is a bit more forgiving on sensitive areas like the neck, a bit quieter and has a larger battery.
That’s pretty much it.
They are extremely similar design-wise and (unsurprisingly) feel very similar during use.
The shape of the shaving head frame is different, so the cassettes aren’t cross-compatible. At least at this moment, the cassette used by the Series 5 (52s/52b) is cheaper.
The cleaning stations are also basically the same, despite having different part numbers.
However, the Series 8 for example won’t fit perfectly inside the Series 5 station and while it will charge, the cleaning function won’t work.
The Series 5 stations don’t have a fan for drying the shaving head, while the 84 Series 8 does. As we saw, the 84 Series 8 cc models come with the same stations as the Series 9.
As for the s models, an s Series 8 will actually work with a station purchased separately, while an s Series 5 won’t. So the Series 8 has an advantage in that regard.
In conclusion, while we were all waiting anxiously for a worthy Series 7 successor, the Series 8 is not that shaver — it’s basically a slightly better Series 5.
And since the Series 5 costs less, it’s widely available and uses a cheaper (yet similar) shaving head, I would actually recommend it over the Series 8, at least for the time being.
UPDATE: As of 2022, the Series 5 has been discontinued and it’s getting more and more difficult to buy. Moreover, the cc Series 5 can even cost more than a cc Series 8.
Should you buy the Series 8?
If you can get the Series 8 for a reasonable price, then yes, it’s a good shaver. Particularly the 84 models like the 8457cc seem like a great buy and they also come with the updated cleaning station.
Otherwise, for slightly more money, you can get a Series 7 like the 790cc that is still an excellent shaver despite its age.
As mentioned previously, it shaves better, it’s widely available and the replacement shaving heads are also easy to find and usually cost less.
If you can get past a few shortcomings of the 7, it is probably a safer (and better) choice than the Series 8 for most users.
However, once it becomes more popular and the price of the replacement cassette will drop, the Braun Series 8 will be a very appealing electric shaver.
But until then, I wouldn’t pick the Series 8 over the 7.
This throws a wrench in gearbox! I currently use a Series 9 but when I travel I carry and use Wahl Lifeproof shaver because it is supposedly very rugged and has a 90 minute charge. However after an extended 30 day trip I found I missed my Series 9 and it’s comfort level. I was considering the Series 7 but now will have to consider the 8 because the ergonomics seem the same as the Series 9 and will probably take less time to adjust! Thanks for the review…

I have the 8370cc which I have been very happy with. It provides a fast and close shave. Two minor points: the Clean & Charge station clearly has the three icons for automatic cleaning program selection which supposedly adjusts the cleaning cycle based on length of time since last cleaning. This function in not available on this model however. The cleaning function works very well though; it’s just a bit annoying to have the three icons there that never light up and serve no function. Another even more minor point is that you eject the cassette for manual cleaning by pressing the little black plastic piece on the side. Both the left and right side have the identical plastic piece with the eject icon molded into it but only one side is capable of being depressed. Not an issue really unless someone tries too hard to depress the wrong side and damages it.

Thank you for your detailed and highly informative comment. I totally agree with the two aspects you mentioned. Regarding the cleaning station, I also own two Braun Series 9 cc shavers and even though the three cleaning modes are enabled, the stations always select the longest, high-intensity mode. Even when I use the shaver for a 3-minute quick shave, it would still select the longest cycle. So I wouldn’t be too worried about not having this function on the Series 8.

Yes, I can confirm that only one of the side buttons actually works. And this is something other readers have pointed out as well, so it’s definitely not a case of a faulty shaver. As for the reason, I guess it comes down to saving costs. The logistics of manufacturing one type of button imply lower costs than having to use two types, even though the difference between them is marginal (the eject symbol). They probably thought that you’ll be squeezing the head on both sides anyway, so the confusion won’t be a big deal. At least that’s my take on it.

Apparently, the clean and charge station looks identical to Braun Series 3 CoolTec. I can’t see any difference. I believe Series 8 is not yet rolled out worldwide but interestingly, you can find it in a very fancy packaging being sold in China on Tmall website directly from Braun. I wonder if it’s a one-off campaign.

I asked one of my friends in Hong Kong to place an order for a Series 8 shaver on Chinese Tmall website and ship it to me. Apparently, they run out of stock and the shaver has been completely sold out!
Braun took exactly the same sales technic with CoolTec, they are still selling the refreshed model in HK and some other countries. I’ve got my hands on the latest/refreshed version of CoolTec from HK last year and I think the battery life has been improved hugely from the initial launch back in 2013.
I believe Braun is taking the same campaign to market Series 8 regionally.
I’ve been a big fan of CoolTec over the past years due to its reasonable performance, cooling technology and cheap replacement blades or cassette. However, I believe it’s time for me to move on with something else, perhaps a Series 8 as a New product stands out for the time being.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Panasonic latest ES-LV7D, the D series. Panasonic is doing a free outer blade replacement campaign here in Japan until end of July. just bought my series 8 from costco. I am transitioning from series 7 that I owned for last 5 yrs and really loved. However, as you mentioned it’s head lock was faulty and broke a while ago which was quite annoying for me as I like shaving with head locked. Hoping to give series 8 a try tomorrow morning and see if I made a good investment

I recently bought the Series 8 from Costco as well. I had been using Norelco’s for probably 30 years, and I always felt each time I bought a new Norelco it was better than the one before. But that stopped with the Norelco 5000. I never liked that shaver, not comfortable and not a particularly close shave.
The Series 8 was on sale, so I decided to give it a shot. I LOVE this razor. I have a very light beard that always seemed to shave easier if I skipped a day. Not so with this Braun, it works great even with a very short beard. It’s so comfortable, I actually look forward to using it every morning.

I just purchased the Braun Series 8 and I shaved with it one time. I am a black man with a course beard. I received a satisfactory shave. So far, I am pleased with my purchase. I bought it on EBay as an open box (new) product. I did check with Amazon and foils can be found there.

I have used Braun shavers for years. Tried the Series 9 and wasn’t impressed. Went back to my 7. It has been the best for me. However, I saw the 8 at Costco for a good price and took a chance. Used the 8 for a couple of weeks and very satisfied. Shaves me a bit closer than the 7, and very comfortable. Cuts the flat lying hairs better than the 7. My 7 was a few years old and the trimmer just broke, so it was time to do something. I’m happy with my choice of the 8.

Electric shavers are ideal for shaving short, dense, coarse hair — basically men’s facial hair. However, they could also work for shaving other body parts, provided that the hair is very short. Otherwise it will likely miss the flat-lying ones. Also, the skin must be taut, so you may want to use your free hand to stretch it, especially under the arms where it can actually pinch and even nick the skin.
I guess an epilator (that uses tweezers to pluck the hairs) is out of the question and therefore you were looking into electric shavers. A body groomer could also be an option here (Philips has quite a few in their Bodygroom range).

I am currently using the series 8 that I purchased from Costco, it replaced a Series 7 from Costco. I returned my series 7 due to the button breaking (to make the head not move) twice. The 8’s design is much better in this regard. The lack of speed control is not a big deal as I never noticed a difference on the 7. For me the gig difference is that my 7 didn’t have a cleaning station and my 8 does. There is no appreciable difference in the shave quality.

My wife just bought this for me at Costco. I am concerned that parts are STILL not available, even directly from Braun’s website. Is this model just being test-marketed on unsuspecting consumers ? I think the shaver is ideal, but will eventually need a new foil/cutter. What gives ?

I couldn’t answer, to be honest, as I am as puzzled as you are by Braun’s whole approach to launching and selling the Series 8. There’s still no official info on any of these things, including the availability of replacement shaving heads. My guess is that they will eventually be readily available; we’ve seen this with the Series 9 as well.

Just bought the 8 series and am getting use to the shave. It does not shave as close as my Wahl Bumpfree shaver. Also I am concerned about replacement parts. I have not been able to find them anywhere.
Trying to decide if I should return the 8 and just buy replacement parts for the Wahl or expect that Braun will get parts in the future.

It is not quite as good as the Series 9. As I mentioned in the article, the Series 8 is basically a Series 5. A better shaver for very sensitive skin would be the Series 7 (it also costs a lot less than the Series 9), so I would consider it.

thanks for your review. Really interesting. Just a comment on the only things which is not good in the Serie 7 as it is in the Serie 5 and 9 (and 8) … the trimmer. Indeed I use my shaver trimmer to cut the hairs of my armpits when they are too long. After time, the Serie 7 trimmer mechanism cannot be closed anymore. However my Serie 7 has 10 years already 🙂

Thank you for your comment. I’ve heard about the trimmer issue a couple of times. It hasn’t happened to the Series 7 shavers that I’ve owned so far but to be fair, I don’t use the trimmers that much as I don’t really like Braun popup or slide-out trimmers (they seem dull and it takes more work to get the job done). I actually have a Panasonic Arc 3 in my cabinet that I use just for trimming my sideburns (Panasonic popup trimmers are much better in my opinion).

The reason the trimmer will not close is because too many small hairs have gotten stuffed behind the trimmer plate. Go on Youtube to see how to get the hairs out from behind the trimmer. It will then lie flat again.

One Dutch site has them (bol.com, “our amazon”) but they are €400,- currently.
Also sent them a message to basically say… ‘what the heck?’, don’t expect much but ah well.
Small update (in case you or anyone cares)
Braun says they are officially released in August in the Netherlands.
They said some general info (battery bla bla) and sent a spec form attached to the mail.
Couple more sites in the Netherlands have them. Price differs greatly.
I bought the Braun Series 8 8365cc now for €196,-. (might raise or lower still but I think this should be a decent price).
Currently also a 50 euro cashback (or more/less depending on series) action.

Just try and get a new shaving head for the Braun Series 8, I have been trying for 4 days now and it is virtually impossible. Frustrating at every level of contact with Braun Service. I have use Braun for years, I think I am done with Braun and for the record I have a coarse beard and I bought a cheap Panasonic shaver 10 years ago and it still shaves closer than the Braun Series 8. Plus the shaver head on the Series 8 plugs up with fine cuttings very fast and starts shaving poorly. A lot of time wasted on a shaver of poor quality. I don’t like being negative as I have used many fine Braun Shavers over the last 65 years, this is not one of them.

That’s why I actually recommended the Series 5 and 7 as safer alternatives, at least for now. Sorry to hear you weren’t satisfied with the performance of your shaver — apart from the cassette availability issue and maybe a hint of false advertising, the Series 8 is actually a good shaver and most users so far have been pleased with it. But of course, your mileage may vary.

After been using Norelco’s for +20 years, I thought I might should try a foil type.
Reading the reviews, I was concerned about the noise level and also found the size of the shaving head on Series 9 and Arc 5 simply too big vs was I’m used to. So ended up buying the Braun Series 8 and must admit I’m pleasantly surprised. Noise level is a bit higher than my Norelco, though less than expected. But wauw! – the shave is really close! And though I should be careful when comparing with a 18 month old rotary head, I don’t recall my Norelco have ever shaved that close.
I’m curios too see how it will compare quality wise over the long run, but definitely a great start with this Serie 8 and foil type shaver for me. And no heat/burns at all.
I’m impressed, being an all-time rotary user.

First of all, I am looking for a new shaver to upgrade my older series 3, and your site is a great help. Both to determine which brand, and also which series.
Then a small FYI: “32-bit MCU (memory control unit)”. MCU stands for Microcontroller Unit. Just a very small standalone computer. And recently 32-bit ones are barely more expensive than 8-bit ones. Thats probably also the only reason they put one in here, since it really should not be required for a shaver.

As for the 32bit MCU, it seems very likely to me that it’s a cost saving measure. As Erik pointed out, these days there’s no significant price difference between 8bit and some 32bit MCUs. It might even be easier to source the 32bit Chips these days, but I’m not sure if that’s a major issue if you order literal millions like Braun certainly does. Same goes for development costs, it might be easier to write software for the 32bit processor, but I’m not sure if that even matter once you consider just how many units they share the development cost across.
Anyways, since the 32bit Chips are more powerful, they are likely able to move more functionality into the MCU and save on external components. For example, they might be able to just ditch an expensive motor driver, do all the logic on the MCU and use a simple transistor to handle the current. Same goes for voltage- and charge-regulators.
In the end they’ll be spendig some extra on the MCU but save more in other places. And since marketing apparently thinks it can’t hurt, they call it a feature.
As a consumer, I expect near zero benefit from this change but I also don’t think it hurts anything. Just a way to achieve the same thing at marginally lower cost.

I Bought my Braun 7893s from Costco in late April 2019. A few weeks later I came across the series 8 shaver in Costco packaged with the cleaning station but I couldn’t find any information on the series 8 anywhere including Braun’s website. Therefore, I kept my 7893s because I don’t need or want a cleaning station and I haven’t had a reason to lock the head so the problem with the head lock is a non issue. Although the charge state indicator was a bit confusing at first I figured it out and it works. An LCD screen with a digital charge readout would be a useful upgrade which is not on the series 8 shaver. The red recharge light on the 7893s illuminates at roughly 14 or more days of usage with at least two additional shaves available. Therefore, the bigger battery capacity is a small upgrade. After reading your very through review I am staying with my current series 7 shaver until either it dies or Braun comes up with a major feature upgrade.

I am bald and shave my head with gel and razor but nick myself!. I am considering moving to a Braun electric and shaving my head every day instead of the old routine of “when I felt stubble”, lol it seems you most highly recommend the Braun 7 which I can now find on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond! Is this a great one (my terminology) for head shaving? I will be travelling some in retirement and will not always take the cleaning kit with me, but just use the brush till I get back home. I want an electric that will give a razor close shave and may just show a shadow but feel nothing! Is that possible with the Braun7?

Realistically speaking, no electric razor will ever shave quite as close as razor blade. But on the bright side, they are a lot more comfortable and safe and some of them do get reasonably close. It’s a fair compromise in my opinion.
A Series 7 would be suitable to shave your head, at least that’s what other users that have tried it are saying. I personally don’t shave my head, so I cannot say anything from experience. I have a barber friend that uses a Series 9 as a head shaver for some of his customers and he’s really happy with it. Considering the differences between a Series 9 and 7 (as face shavers), I think a Series 7 will also be good enough.
You can simply clean it with some warm tap water, so there’s no need to bring the cleaning station with you.
There are of course some electric shavers specifically designed for shaving the head (I wrote a guide on that topic here if you want to check it out).

Will any of Braun shavers (series 7 or 8) work in Europe?
Braum used to be dual-voltage but now not a word is mentioned about the ability to switch OR the charger automatically switching to 220V.

Brann’s owners manual has been worthless. You would think that for a razor that sells for over $100 someone could write a manual that is understandable. Series 8 says on the box that it has different setting for the closeness of shaving, but nothing in the manual. I want the closed shave I can get and have no idea how or if I can set my razor to a setting somewhere on the razor that does that. Any help would be appreciated, and Braun might hire a 3rd grader to WRITE a manual with words. Thanks

No, the Series 8 does not have any settings that you can adjust in order to improve the performance for a closer shave. Some of their marketing copy on the packaging could be confusing. For example, the beard density sensor (that acts independently and you cannot change it).
There are some things you can do in order to get a closer shave, like using a pre-shave lotion plus some tweaks to your technique. I wrote a guide detailing these steps if you want to check it out.

I’ve been using the Series 8 for several months and it stopped working. How doe I open it to find the battery and change it.?
I think it would be better to send it to a Braun service center and have it repaired or replaced (it’s definitely still under warranty). Besides, you can’t be certain that the battery is the cause of the problem and even so, with the Series 8 being a newer model you may not be able to source a compatible battery. The operation itself isn’t very complicated (involves removing a few screws and panels), but I don’t think it would be the best option here.

Yes, it will work just fine. The Series 7 charger connector a 90 degrees angle as the shaver has the port on the back (the Series 8 has it at the bottom), but it will still work without any problems.

I found a good deal on the Series 8 (8370cc) – on sale, it’s a bit cheaper than the Series 5 (5190cc) and quite a bit cheaper than the Series 7.
Based on your review, the Series 8 seems to be marginally better than the Series 5 from a feature and performance standpoint.
In your opinion, given the slightly better price, should I go with the Series 8 over the Series 5? From what I can tell, the Series 8 replacement heads are still on the expensive side but do now seem easier to come by.

With prices being similar across the Series 5, 7, and 8, it seems that the Series 7 is the best overall choice, so I’m going to go with that one. Looking forward to the upgrade from my Series 3!

The charger is the type 492-xxxx included with pretty much all current Braun shavers, so you should be able to get it from various (online) stores. If your Series 8 is not a cc model, I’m pretty certain it will not work with a cleaning station purchased separately.

That really depends. For me personally it would still not be worth it over the Series 7 — I would pay more for a shaver that in my case works noticeably better. I do have very sensitive skin and coarse hair, so the Series 7 makes more sense. For other users that don’t have to deal with these issues, the differences may be minor, which is why some even prefer the Series 8 over the 7.

Strictly between those two models, I would go with the 8370cc. It is more comfortable, especially during a dry shave. However, if you can up your budget a bit more, you could get a previous generation Series 7 (like 790cc, 7865cc, etc). That one is better than both in pretty much every aspect, including comfort.

I recently purchased a Braun series 8 and am having a hard time getting a close shave. I am 86 and my skin is soft and have a few wrinkles, should that make a difference? Is it the razor or am I doing something wrong? Please advise. I don’t want to have to return it.

Wrinkly skin can make shaving more difficult, so try to use your free hand to keep it taut. Also, always go against the grain, so make sure to adjust the direction of the strokes accordingly. A pre-shave lotion like the Williams Lectric Shave can also help in this case. The Series 8, which is basically a Series 5 underneath, is a very decent shaver, so try to make these adjustments before deciding to return it. I also wrote a detailed guide on this topic that you might find helpful.

My son is 17, and has very sensitive skin – currently using an S3 that is pretty awful for razor burn. He also has a developmental disability that makes it very difficult for him to hold a razor straight to his face. The new S7 has a pivoting head that would make it a lot easier for him to shave independently. I own an ancient 720 that I absolutely love, and an S9 that is comfy but still prefer the nimble head of the old 720. Both are better suited for his sensitive skin (with the slight edge to the S9 there) but are a challenge to keep straight enough without me assisting him. Do you think the new S7 is worth considering for off-angle use or should I just buy another old S7 or S9 for him and continue to persist with teaching him to hold the razor straight? He can’t use mine forever…lol.

In my opinion, going with another old S7 would be the best option in this case. The new S7 looks good on paper, but I don’t find the flexing head any better compared to the older one. In fact, the foil frame of the new head is wider compared to the older one, it is made out of plastic and because it touches the skin, it doesn’t glide as easy on the face. Finally, the head and foils have limited range of motion. All these make shaving with the new S7 more difficult (not to mention the performance drop, the older one being more comfortable and a better shaver overall).
I personally find the original Series 7 one of the easiest to use foil shavers out there, mainly because it has a very narrow head with an excellent range of motion and it’s also very forgiving.

Thanks for the advice – I had a hunch that it was likely the best option. Very nimble machine. In Canada the 7893 is only $15 more than the new S7 – no brainer. It’s in the mail and will be here in 2 days – thanks amazon prime. Lol.

No problem, glad I could be of help.
Regarding the foil getting a bit warm, as long as it’s still able to provide a decent shave, there’s no need to change it. All foils do get a bit warm eventually, but the Series 7 in general is a lot better than other shavers in this regard (for example Panasonic foils tend to get really hot). A drop of light oil (clipper oil) on each foil or even using a lubricating spray for electric shavers (Remington, Braun or Philips) will help and also prolong the life of the cassette.

Hi. On your reviews you preferred the old 7 series to both the new 7 and the 8. So this leaves me with the question – between the new 7 and the 8 which one is better? I am assuming old 7s will be hard to find from now on.

I would actually prefer the Series 8 over the new Series 7. It’s a better shaver, at least in my experience. It would be a real shame if Braun decided to completely axe the old Series 7 just to push the new ones.

Is it true that the Braun Series 8 (marked down $50 at Costco to $130 through 9/13/20) has a charging /cleaning station attached to it, but oddly, the station does NOT include a drying element/fan/stage in the cleaning/charging stand like we have been accustomed to throughout the years? Why would they do that??
Yes, that is true, unfortunately. The reason is costs savings. The Series 8 is basically a Series 5 with a bigger battery and the Series 5 station never featured an active drying element like some of the more advanced Braun models (specific Series 7 versions and the Series 9).

The Series 8 would be suitable for sensitive skin since it’s basically a beefed-up Series 5, although it’s not quite as good as a Series 7 (the original models like the 790cc, 7865cc and so on). If you have very sensitive skin, I would go with one of those Series 7 instead.
5 to 6 days between shaves is quite a lot, but it is doable if your facial hair grows slow and isn’t very dense/coarse.

My current Braun type 5692 series 7 is about 4 years old now and although I have not put heavy mileage on it due to an alternate shaving blade method Ì love its closeness and convenience.
The only problem with it that I can honestly share with u is that the series 5 and 7 have a faulty head lock button that beaks too often In my experience.
Twice now repaired on my series 7 and once on my previous series 5 .
Braun was good about it but Im getting frustrated now.
Im already looking for a good replacement on a gently used series 7 31/2 years old????
What should I graduate to now?
Is the series 8 or 9 better than tbe new series 7?

Hi Daryl,
You didn’t mention your Series 5 model, but I believe it is the older generation that had a similar head locking mechanism to the Series 7. The newer ones (like the 5190cc, 5140s etc.) have a different head locking system, similar to the Series 9. I haven’t had any issues with those and I also didn’t see any related problems on online user reviews. On the Series 8 it’s the same system — as mentioned in this article, the new Series 8 is basically a Series 5 with a larger battery.
As for the comparison with the Series 9, there are a lot of aspects to consider, so you can check out my comparison here.
By the way, I am not referring to the 2020 Series 7 which is in fact a rather underwhelming razor in terms of performance compared to the previous generation. More details here.

I’ve had my model 5697 for 4 years now which I believe is a series 7 but I can’t find much about it online. I know it does use series 7 heads. It came with no accessories or base and a different brand charger. I picked up a 8370cc at Costco for $100 and comes with a cleaning station and now I’m wondering if I should return it. Do you think my model 5697 is better than the new series 8. Which would you say is better factoring in series 8 has the cleaning station? Your shaver is indeed an older Series 7, most likely the 740s model. In my experience, yes, it is a better shaver than the Series 8. I am strictly referring to the shaving performance as I also mentioned in the article. Being basically a Series 5 underneath, the Series 8 is a decent shaver, but not quite as good as the 7. I think you should keep it if you’re satisfied with how it shaves, not solely for the cleaning station. By the way, your Series 7 will work with a compatible Series 7 cleaning station if you want to purchase one separately.

You see, my husband has ALS and can’t use his hands or arms. He has always had a closely-cropped beard he maintained beautifully, but can no longer do so. I’ve been trying to shave his neck with a razor, with only limited success because I’m afraid of cutting him.
I bought a Braun series 8 at Costco (as several others have commented) because it was on sale and I wanted to see if I could do a better job with an electric razor. More of a question, given that the new Series 7’s primary advantage is balance while Series 7’s locking mechanism is shaky and Series 7’s shaving performance is a downgrade from earlier Series 7s, and given that the Series 8 has a superior battery, superior LEDs, a travel lock, and shaves very well indeed, it still isn’t clear why the more expensive yet declining Series 7 is recommended ?
I would still pick the old Series 7 simply because it shaves better than the Series 8 (and a lot better than the new 2020 model). Also, while the original S7 is more expensive to buy than the S8, the replacement shaving heads are cheaper and easier to find, at least for the time being.

Well folks, I just bought a base Series 8 from Costco and it’s just tremendous! Haven’t used an electric for decades but my aging skin (74) is thin and tender so was looking for relief.
First impressions after 2 weeks:
It shaves FAST…much quicker than a blade, shaving cream, cleanup, etc.
It shaves quite close. As my technique improves (skin stretching, direction, etc) the results are getting really good! Definitely acceptable! Wife happy! Note that, guys…
Bought some Wahl oil for lubricating the foils. Works fine. Inexpensive.
My skin is HAPPY! Helluva lot better than the blades. I am experimenting with a Gillette after-shave gel and a Williams pre-shave splash-on, and it is getting super comfortable.
Cleanup is extremely easy. Tap out the head, brush out the base…seconds.
Battery lasts forever…charged when new and still going strong after 2 weeks!
Summary: Delighted with the performance. I suggest that this is ALL you need. Once the replacement foils are widely available I’ll get a spare. They will be reasonably priced within the year.
No reservations in recommending this Braun 8000 series razor. Seriously glad I bought this.

For the first time ever I have just purchased an electric razor, the Series 8 8330s from Costco.
I have shaved with a manual razor for over 40 years now and was convinced to give it a try. I am reading this article to determine if this was a good purchase. Very sensitive skin is my main concern and a manual razor (Gillette Fusion 5) has been fairly effective.
I hope that this razor will provide me with the shave that you have expressed in this article. Also, replacement cartridge’s are apparently available on Costco online, however, they are more expensive than you indicate in your article.
I’m looking forward to giving this a try.

I purchased the Series 8 and have used it for a week now, and I love it! Shaving with the Series 8 is truly a joy instead of a daily labor. I read several shaver evaluations and reviews which basically said the Series 8 was a hybrid of the 5 and 7, to my way of thinking Braun took solid platforms and improved and tweaked good products. The shaver feels solid in my hand and provides a smooth, close and comfortable shave. This is my first Braun and foil shaver, I’ve owned three rotary razors in my life and feel I get a much more comfortable and close shave with the Braun Series 8, from my experience thus far, I like it better than the rotary and just as good as a blade and without the mess. Moreover, I like the Series 8 design and features better than the updated Series 5 and 7 which were released last year. Being 69 years old I’ve been shaving a long time and have sleep apnea so I wear a CPAP mask. A close shave is important so my mask maintains a good seal so I’m a daily shaver. I really like the Series 8 and am very happy with my purchase, it’s a great product!

Coming from 3 rotary razors, it was actually very likely that you would see a (significant) jump in closeness and comfort. That said, I think you would have liked even more the old Series 7. 🙂 The 2020 models were a let-down for me as well.
The Series 8 is actually more like a rebranded and slightly improved Series 5 (the older generation), it doesn’t really take much from the 7.

I am trying to read everything, including reviews and comments, but I find nothing about people complaining that the Series 8 having a bulking charging station (which also cleans) but no cord to recharge with. Is that true? I would clean my (now non-functioning) Series 7 manually and enjoyed a cord for charging, especially when traveling somewhere. Do users of the Series 8 have to lung the charging station with them when on the road? Will my old charging cord for my Series 7 work on a Series 8?

You can definitely use the cord to charge the shaver directly (without the cleaning station). The cc versions also include the charging cord alongside the cleaning station, so that is not true. The Series 7 cord has a different connector (bent at 90 degrees since the charging port is located on the back of the shaver, not on the bottom like it is on the Series 8), but it should still work.

I am a relatively new owner of a Braun series 8 shaver.
Most importantly I hoped for a close shave in a reasonable time, akin to a wet razor shave (Chick Hydro).
After 3 months I continue to be thoroughly disappointed:
Shaving time 10 to 15 minutes which seems like forever, compare wet shave in about 5 minutes.
Worse still is the necessary routine of shaving the same spot over & over with little impact, (neck hairs might as well go straight for the ShicK).
I am not able to get a satisfactory close shave, no matter how long I allow.
Wife says its “OK” but I can feel patches of stubble that necessitate going back over which takes more time.
In short it does not shave well, disregard anyone saying otherwise, & if you can: stick with the wet shave & conventional safety razor like the Shick.
I should have returned it before 60 days expired, now it’s too late.
One positive: it cleans up really easy by running under hot tap on full bore. then just separate the head & body, blow out excess water & allow to dry naturally. BTW this works equally well for the Shick!

I’m sorry it didn’t meet your expectations. There are a few factors that most likely led (cumulatively) to a rather underwhelming shaving experience. These include the shaver itself (it just might not be suitable for your facial hair), how often you shave, technique, prep (the skin must be as dry as possible, maybe a pre-shave lotion could help as well). The Series 8 is basically a Series 5 with a larger battery, so basically a mid-range shaver suitable for medium beards and ideally you’ll want to use it more often as it is more effective on short stubble.
It’s definitely possible to get a really close and fast shave with an electric shaver as well — on this site alone there are a few thousand comments in that sense. But then again, if a razor blade gets you better results, that’s perfectly fine as well and you should always stick to what works best.

Do you know the difference between the Braun 799cc, Braun 799cc-7, and Braun 799cc-4?

As far as I know, the actual variations of the 799cc are 799cc-6 and 799cc-7 and they’re basically the same (Type 5696) — 3 speed settings and the cleaning stations have the quick clean mode as well. Sometimes the -6 and -7 are left out of the model name. I think the 799cc-4 is just a typo or an error (there’s a 790cc-4).

Apparently, the only replacement for the foil assembly is through Amazon; with a delivery fee ($30.) one-half of the part ($60.) None of the service centres listed by Braun carry the replacement foil, nor are they able to order it.

The cassette is basically comprised of the foils, cutters and the plastic frame that holds everything together. It’s a single piece and the foils/blades aren’t removable, so you cannot buy them separately.

Your article here mentioned the cleaning station of Series 8 don’t have any drying features but the Series 9’s does. However it seems the Series 8 I bought from Costco.ca over the Christmas break came with a station that seems to be compatible with Series 9 also (as mentioned in its manual) and the station seems to have a fan drying mechanism (not mentioned by the manual but labelled on the box instead!!…somewhat surprised but not totally shocked as I think I read here somewhere that you mentioned clarity of Braun’s manuals is pretty poor).
You might be wanting and/or collecting info to make an article comparing all of the Series 8 and to update the other articles mentioning Series 8, so here’s some model info for reference.

That is correct, Braun actually included the Series 9 5430 station with the newer Series 8 variations, like your 8453cc, the 8457cc or the 8467cc — basically the model names starting with 84. At the time of publishing, the Series 8 only came with the basic station that didn’t have a fan. I will be updating the post soon with the relevant info.

I read through a number of your review. I had at one time several Norelco shaver. But they don’t hold up long on the battery. I went through 3 of them 15 to 20 plus years ago. I won’t buy a nother one. I had a Wahl shaver 4 or 5 plus years ago. I don’t recall why it died. I think the battery stand died and than won’t charge. It had 3 foil head one for close, another for sensitive. So I switch off with the head to help with senative skin I have. My face is still pretty tender as a baby face. I read partly thru which shaver to use for sensitive skin. My hair tend to get a bit curly when the get long for not shaving for 3 days to week. But u said Panasonic get a closer shave than Braun 7. But my concern is the older model head u said are different than new 7,8. They not interchange. I hate to buy older 7 series than not be able to get head to replace. I now over 65. Money a bit tight. Plus my concern is how long will battery hold up before barun won’t take a charge. Pansaonic ar5 series keep the same head on old and new models. So u said Panasonic u ar5 still get closer shave than Barun 790 cc old series. Why so u think Braun 790 get better shave than Panasonic Es-Lv95. I have fine facial hair say hair more of bit light to medium thickness. My concern is the 790 might discontinue the head on them. Plus I seen some newer Braun cheaper than 790 model Panasonic on the other hand been using the same head on all of it old and new model. They may of changed head but from what I seen u and others say any head of pansaonic head will work on even they old and new models.
So concern that Braun may discontinue head on 790 any time soon there by making custom buy the new models. I seen this done plenty times in products made. They want u to buy new products so they stop making parts for old products. Plus I trust Panasonic products. Have had lot of success with their quality of product they make.
So u can see my concern. Concern over the noise on some shaver. Some newer ones are quite but may not shave as close. U said that pasonic ar5 es lv95 2nd generation still good shaver but may be bit heavier to handle than Braun 7 older 790 model. I seen that u said new 7 series does not match same close shave as the older series Just your thoughts what might be better option. I think of getting cleaner station model. So even if I don’t use it all the time I use it to get shaver cleaned and oil to keep it sharp so blades last a bit longer. Thanks for all your review on Braun , Panasonic shavers .

Thank you for your comment. I think a Braun shaver would be a good match since you have sensitive skin and don’t shave daily. As I mentioned throughout the reviews, I find Panasonic foil razors to work best on short and relatively straight facial hair. I too like (and trust) Panasonic, it’s just that they’re not always suitable depending on the shaving habits, skin, beard type and so on.
Your concern regarding the old Series 7 shaving heads (cassettes) is legit and Braun will eventually discontinue the shavers. The newer Series 7 (launched in 2020, the so-called 360 Flex Series 7) is being marketed quite aggressively. However, I think the cassettes for the old Series 7 (like the 790cc) will continue to be available for years. But if you want that worry gone for good, you can also get the new Series 7, even though the older one was in my opinion a better shaver in all regards. But it is cheaper and it’s not by any means bad — just not as good as the previous generation.
A better alternative would be in my opinion the Series 8, either a solo or a cc model. You can even get the cleaning station later on. I find the Series 8 to be better than the new 360 Series 7 — better with flat-lying, longer hairs and more comfortable.
Since your budget is limited, you shouldn’t completely rule out the Series 3 ProSkin, even though it’s not as capable on a 3-day beard as the Series 8 or the old Series 7. But it is surprisingly good for a cheap foil shaver, reasonably comfortable and the replacement heads are cheap.
By the way, all these shavers are pretty loud by anyone’s standards. The only quiet ones are actually the rotary Philips Norelco shavers.

My Braun 6520 just died, finally after many many years of good service.
I need to replace it in a hurry.
From your reviews I’ve concluded that the best shaver is a 790. Hard to find and very expensive if you can find one.
What I like and want in a new shaver is the built in pop up trimmer and that I can use it with the power cord if the battery is low.
I don’t want to have to use the cleaning station to charge it as I travel and do not want to lug the cleaning station with me.
I think shaving “performance” is a personal thing overall, so at this point, Braun already has me as a customer.
The series 8 is currently available at Costco for about $200.00 CND.
Given the above, which Braun shaver would you recommend that’s going to last?

I also think the older gen Series 7 would be an ideal replacement for your shaver. Unfortunately getting one in 2022 that can also work with the cord will be next to impossible. Your best chance would be to find one on eBay (a 790cc-4, 740s or 720s) for a reasonable price. Performance-wise, the next best thing would be the Series 8, but those aren’t exactly cheap either. Also, all Series 8 models are cordless only. Finally, there’s the old generation Series 5 that shaves exactly like the Series 8. Some of those Series 5 models like the 5030s (no cleaning station) will also work with the cord plugged in. If you can still find a 5030s, I think that one will be a good option for what you need.

You are very welcome. The 8453cc or any other model that comes with a cleaning station can be charged by plugging the cord directly into the shaver’s charging port — you do not need the station to charge it (you can if you want to). That 5030s is very expensive, normally the 5030s is a budget shaver, but since the old Series 5 was discontinued the prices have spiked. Considering the price difference, I think the 8453cc makes more sense right now, even though the 790cc is a nicer shaver (a bit more refined and comfortable).

Strictly related to the raw power of the shavers, I have to give this one to the Arc 5. The Panasonic motor is arguably the fastest fitted to any electric shaver (14 000 cycles per minute vs 10 000 in the case of the Series 7). The difference is more noticeable if you have very coarse stubble.

If that happens with the battery charged, there’s clearly something wrong with your Series 8 shaver. I would contact Braun support or a Braun service center and send it for repair/replacement, especially if it’s still under warranty.

I bought both the Series 8 and 9 pro last month, June 2022. The price difference between the two were $50 CAD. Now is July 2022, But I am still having a hard time to decide with to keep.
All specs and comments seems like the 9 pro is better, and more worthy to keep. And I think the end result of both shaves were the same subjectively speaking.
I don’t have long bread, and I tend to shave every morning.
Objectively, I somehow feel the 8 gives a closer shave. The smaller narrower head feels more precise, and cutting hairs more obviously to my eyes as they go across the hairs. And when I shake the hair out from the heads, usually there are more hair and thicker hair out from the 8 than from the 9. But somehow the end results seems the same… in terms of closeness and time.
Comfort wise, The bigger head of the 9 pro feels more surface is touch your face, it is comfortable that way. But at the same time, the 8 is comfortable in a way that it has less contact surface. So I am very confused.
And the 9 pro feels more powerful, which maybe a bit too much on the face. But its alright. So I feel the 9 pro is more comfortable when I am using it, the 8 is more comfortable when I am using it. I guess that is also a tie then.
Battery wise, over the 1 month, I only charged the 8 once in the very beginning, and now its down to one bar. For the 9 pro, I tend to want to use it more, because it looks better and higher model. I had to recharge it to about 3 bars after the first week, and recharge it to full after about another 4 days. Now it has 3 bars left. So it feels like the 8 uses less power, but I used it less often over the month. However, they both last long enough for me. I can just charge it at home anyways.
Design wise, my 9pro is in gold colour, I like it better than the black/silver series 8.
I feel like the 8 is good enough, sometimes better than the 9pro. But 9 pro is just as good , sometimes a little less close of a shave. I don’t know why.
I think I can just keep the 8, but I don’t want to miss out on the 9, since it is only $50 more. and the 9pro looks better, and has a leather case.
Overall, I can’t decide which to keep. It would be great if you can provide some comments or suggestions in this situation!

The 9 Pro is on paper and specs-wise the better shaver and most users will pick that one over the Series 8. But that’s not always the case. The more compact head of the Series 8 plus the fact that you shave daily make it more suitable for you. Regarding the battery, I’m pretty sure it’s down to the fact that you’ve used the 9 Pro more often. I can confirm that both have excellent (and similar) battery life. You got a great deal on the 9 Pro, but that’s not a good enough reason to buy a second shaver if you don’t need it.
That said, if you enjoy it and you think you’ll be using both regularly (maybe you’ll use one of them as a travel shaver), you might as well keep them both.

I live in Australia and Costco are currently selling the S8 8453 for $279. The S7n1200s is $249 (old 7 not available in Aus) Panasonic arc 5 is $379.
In this situation do you believe the S8 is a good option? I currently use a Phillips RQ1260 and find it shaves exceptionally well other than the neck but I’m ready for a change.
Series 8 replacement foils are easy to come by here.

I was looking at getting myself an electric shaver since I have really sensitive skin, and traditional shaving is not really an option. From what I’ve seen through your articles, the Braun Series 9 is probably my best bet (while the Series 7 also look acceptable), but I’ve been having a lot of trouble deciding which option would be the best price to performance, while also being good for my sensitive skin. Here are the best options I’ve been able to find (all prices are in CAD, and before tax):
Series 7 7071 cc – $147 (I can’t find any other Series 7 at a reasonable price)
Series 8 8453 cc – $194
Series 9 9330 s – $207
Series 9 9310 cc – $300
Series 9 9376 cc – $300 (not sure whether the 9310 or 9376 is best)
Series 9 9465 cc – $360
I’m finding the Series 9 to be quite expensive (and wondering if the cleaning station is really worth an extra $100), but I’m also worried that, with my very sensitive skin, anything other might not be a good idea.
I would really appreciate your thoughts on what would likely be best for me (the price is also a fairly big deal since I’m a university student without a consistent full-time income).

From those options I would go with the Series 9 9330s. I would have recommended a Series 7 (cheaper than the Series 9 and still very comfortable and forgiving), but the one you can get (7071cc) is part of the new 2020 generation which in fact worse and less comfortable than the old Series 7 it replaced. The 9330s seems the best pick considering the price and your need for a gentle shaver.
The Series 9 station is practical and nice to have, but you can definitely manage without one. Moreover, the 9330s will work with one should you decide to purchase it later on.

Considering the price and the performance differences between the shavers you listed, I think the 8453cc is the one to get — that’s a really good price for an 84 Series 8 with a cc station. I would also consider the 9330s, that one is also priced just right. If you shave less often and have patches of flat-lying hairs, I would get the 9330s over the 8453cc. The 9330s will work with a compatible station purchased later on.

2nd, after approx. 10 years of using a Braun Series 5 (don’t know which one exactly) the trimmer is not working anymore (or only sometimes), so I’m looking for a new one.

I’ve got a really “mild beard” and only shave once or twice a week and trim a lot. So going for a cheaper option would be the natural thing to go but looking of my “usage time” of my last shaver I would be ready to make the investment in a series 9. The only difference there seems to be the color right.
Any inputs?

I would strongly consider going for another Series 5, so the 5147s would be my pick. The 8417s is just as good, only that it comes with a slightly larger battery, so that’s basically what you’re getting for the 77 CHF price difference. You really don’t need a Series 9 Pro for shaving a very light beard and I think the Series 5 or 8 will suffice. Also, paying more for a shaver doesn’t automatically guarantee better longevity, I definitely wouldn’t say a Series 9 Pro is more durable than a Series 5 or 8. It is a more capable shaver though, but again, in the case of a light beard, that advantage really doesn’t matter.

First off, your site and reviews are great and exceptionally helpful! I am a long-time Series 7 owner (still have it but it’s now my backup/travel razor),. Personally, even with a new cassette on the 7, I find the 8 shaves closer for my beard and head. Also, the cassette seems slightly larger on the 8, which is nice if you shave your head. I had been using the 7 on my face and a Pitbull gold to shave my head, but since the 8 came into my life the Pitbull is gone because it simply didn’t shave my head as close. The 8 is wonderful!

The quality of the replacement cassettes for the Series 7 has dropped unfortunately for the past few years which might explain the less stellar performance compared to your S8. A decent foil shaver will almost always shave closer than a rotary, even when used as a head shaver. Enjoy your Series 8, it’s the closest one to the original S7 in its glory days. 🙂

My old 2 ring style Norelco gives a closer shave, but the 8 handles much longer beards and has a far better trimmer.
The trimmer on the Series 8 is just like the ones on the old generation Series 5 and the Series 9/9 Pro, so it’s not great. Panasonic makes the best pop-up trimmers IMHO. I don’t think I’ve ever used the trimmer on a two-blade Norelco.

In some of the previous comments someone said that their 8 ran for a few seconds then stopped. Can I contribute to this. My 8 is new (two weeks) and the same thing happened to me, it seized up mid shave and the replace foil icon lit up. I have since discovered that during use I inadvertently pushed the head lock lever up. This meant a small amount of foil was doing all the work. When I unlock it all is well. My thumb seems to naturally rest on this lever so perhaps a design fault. Hopefully this will help others.

My pick would be one of the older Panasonic Arc 5 models like the ES-LV65 or ES-LV67. Those work really well on dense, coarse stubble. Just make sure your beard is reasonably short, so ideally you’d want to use them daily or up to every 3 days.

I have a question – how many shaves should an average person get out of a single 83m before you need to replace it? I don’t shave daily, so 18 months makes no sense.
Beyond that, I bought my 83 series to take over for a Norelco with the ‘double ring’ heads. I still have the Norelco. I’ve learned that the Braun works much better with a longer beard, is much noisier, has a much better battery, and weighs a lot more. Having the washer is nice, and I could care less that it doesn’t blow dry. The Norelco gives a closer shave and has a far better trimmer. So I shave with the Braun, trip and touch up with the Norelco.

Thank you for the comment. I honestly can’t give you a reliable answer to that question. The 18 months/12 months and so on is just something manufacturers come up with after various in-house tests that often don’t reflect real-world scenarios or how most men will be using these shavers. Then there’s the coarseness of the hair, the density, the frequency of shaving and how long it takes to complete the shave. Cleaning and lubricating the shaver regularly will also have an effect. I can tell you however that foils heads usually don’t last as much as rotary cutters, even the cheaper ones. To me it’s surprising that the Norelco gives you a closer shave, in most cases the Series 8 should cut the hairs closer to the skin.

Hi! Thank you for your informative review. I was trying to figure out how to clean the shaver by head for my dad’s 8467cc. The instructions showed taking the foils off and putting some oil on them and then showed a small brush and using that to clean the inside before replacing the foils. What kind of oil should I use? Where do I get this brush? Will a toothbrush do? No oil or brush came with the shaver.

The best and most effective way would be to simply rinse the shaving head with warm tap water and every once in a while you can also use a bit of liquid hand soap. I wrote a detailed guide on that topic here if you want to check it out. Just make sure to leave the shaving head detached to fully dry before snapping it back on the shaver. If you would still prefer a dry cleaning, you can use a small brush, but only on the inside of the head, never brush directly the outer foils as those will get damaged very easily. A regular toothbrush is too stiff, so maybe use a smaller one with extra soft bristles.
As for oils, I highly recommend the use of clipper oil, like the Oster blade lube or the Wahl clipper oil. I also wrote a tutorial on how to oil a shaver here. Once or twice a week should be more than enough.
Regarding the pre-shave, the most practical and effective would be a pre-electric shave lotion. As you might have guessed, I have a post on that as well right here. The Williams Lectric Shave is the cheapest and easiest to get in the USA, while the one from Speick for example is better in my experience, but costs significantly more and it’s not as easy to source. I wouldn’t recommend a pre-shave oil as it can clog the shaving head and make it a lot more difficult to clean. A pre-shave lotion is easy to apply, leaves no residue on the shaver and evaporates within seconds once applied to the face.

I recently bought an 8417s and have been very satisfied with the three or four times I’ve used it. I had an old Norelco that irritated my skin from the beginning, and have not had any irritation with the 8417s (with a dry shave). I just noticed that the foil replacement light comes on when I turn the shaver off. I assume the light shouldn’t come on at all if the cassette is OK? I also have a question about the packaging. My box was sealed with two pieces of clear tape. Is that normal? The shaver was advertised on Ebay as new, and I expected the box to be totally sealed with plastic film. The shaver appeared new and unused, but given the issue with the foil replacement light and the sealing of the box, I now have some doubts. Your articles are unbelievably comprehensive, and were very helpful in understanding all the various models. Many thanks.

Braun boxes do have those two pieces of clear tape, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in plastic film. I’ve bought dozens of Braun shavers, all of them new, so I think you’re safe. Regarding the foil replacement light, are you sure it’s showing that you need to replace it? On the Series 8 the foil icon shows up together with the 5 bars which turn off gradually as you continue using the shaver until there’s none left. Only then you should in theory change the cassette (you can still use it if it cuts reasonably well).

A quick question if and when you have the time: when the shaver unit is placed in the station, is the shaver supposed to stand straight, or, like mine, is it supposed to rest at a slightly awkward angle? If I try to straighten the shaver whilst charging, the connection between it and the station is interrupted – it seems that the terminals only make appropriate contact at this slightly awkward angle – I ask particularly because in your photo too, the body of the shaver is similarly slanted, so maybe this is neither a quirk, nor a design flaw, but actually how it’s meant to be? That’s an excellent question. The Series 8 models starting with 83 will actually stay slanted in the station, while the ones starting with 84 will stay straight. The reason is that the cleaning stations are different (the Series 8 84 models come with Series 9 stations). So there’s nothing wrong with yours and the shaver needs to stay at an angle in order to make proper contact with the station. You may come across official Series 8 images with the shavers standing perfectly upright in the stations, but that’s because the shavers in question are from the 84xx generation.

I have recently bought a 8453cc (from Costco in Canada) and I’m very happy with it so far. The manual says nothing about using lubricating oil on the shaving head. I have Braun Appliance Oil from my previous Braun shaver model. Is this still helpful to use on my new Series 8 and is it compatible with the fluid in the cleaning station?

If you clean your shaver regularly with the station there’s no need to lubricate the blades in addition to that. The cleaning solution also acts as a lubricant. Unless you’re cleaning the shaver manually sometimes (using water and liquid soap), there’s no need to oil the blades yourself. In theory, if some oil ends up in the cleaning cartridge it could make the solution last less, but since you would only use a drop of oil per each of the three foils, the quantity would probably be negligible.

I have had my S8 Wet&Dry for a year. I clean it routinely, actually each time I use it. The last two times I have shaved with it it seems rough and it seems to be scraping my skin leaving the feeling of razor burn. Any suggestions. Thanks

When the shaving head wears out and needs to be replaced, it’s usually a gradual process and the shaves get progressively poor. But it should not feel harsh/sharp. If the foils started scraping the skin suddenly, there may be some physical damage in which case you should absolutely replace the head. Maybe the head was dropped or cleaned with a hard/sharp object? Try to inspect them visually up close and see if you notice anything unusual with the two foils and the middle cutter.

So the Braun electric Razor works amazing the first few days. After a few weeks it seems to work like any other electric razor.
The problem I have with this product is its claim that you should swap the replacement head after 18 months. I would be happy if it lasted 12 months; but so far each shaver head has lasted me on average 6 months.
The first time I had to replace the heads was after 9 months. Not bad I suppose, but that’s half of the 18 months claim. The second time I had to replace them was after 4 months. Now I’m thinking what the heck? am I doing something wrong? shaving too aggressively? no way I’m breaking metal parts with my skin. Okay so third time’s a charm right? I buy the heads a third time, and I shave gently every day. After 5 months the head breaks in two places.
So now I know this product was designed poorly. No way that it’s my skin that’s breaking the metal screen. I’ve had cheaper electric shavers from WalMart last longer than this Braun.

The claimed 18 months are achieved under test conditions which are often not relevant for real world use. The quality control of Braun cassettes, in particular for specific generations of the Series 9, has also been spotty according to user reports and there could be significant differences between the same heads.
You didn’t mention your Braun model, but I suppose it’s a Series 8 since your comment was posted on a Series 8 review. The 83 cassette of the Series 8 is one of the more reliable and trouble-free cassettes, at least I haven’t seen as many reports as in the case of the Series 9 for example.
All I can recommend is taking care of the basics — cleaning and lubrication. Try a cleaning&lubricating spray like the Andis CoolCare Plus. It will still mostly depend on how often you shave and the coarseness of the beard, but it should nevertheless help with the longevity of the shaving head.
